Gaze

“I’m fine, Matt,” she said. “I just need to talk to my — Caz — for a moment.”

Matt nodded, his mouth still slightly ajar.

“Right,” he said. “I’m just going to get a beer, then. Um, do either of you want anything?”

“No, thanks,” Caz said, as Jade shook her head no. “I’m saving room for our talk later.”

“That’s, uh — that’s a weird response to an offer for a beer, man,” Matt said before heading toward what must have been the kitchen.

Jade looked back at Caz with her burning gazeas he followed her to a quieter corner of the room.

“You actually alright?” he asked her.

“Yes,” she said in a low murmur. “But, that’s not our guy.”

Caz fell back against the wall, resting a hand on his stomach as the anxiety came out of his nose in a spurt of hot air.

Burn

Jade’s face was now burningwith anger as she stood there silently. Caz and Temo had continued laughing, barely able to get a word out as they clapped each other on the back.

Caz stopped mid-laugh, gripping his chest and hunching over with a groan.

“Caz,” Temo began. “You alright?”

“No,” Caz squeaked out, tears running down his face. “I — I think I’m having a heart attack.”

Temo looked over to Tala for assistance, who rolled her eyes and sighed.

“It’s probably just heartburn,” she said. “That’s what you get for eating too fast.”

Jade smirked. It was heartburn, but that wouldn’t stop Caz from being dramatic.

“No,” he gasped. “God — my whole chest is on fire — I’ve been cursed.”

Pierce

“You seem a little out of place here,” a voice near his armpit remarked.

Caz looked down to see the woman from earlier. She was in a black dress, but unlike Jade’s, it was made up of a layer of frills topped with a bow and cap sleeves. What was it that Matt had called these kinds of girls — Visigoths, Vandals?

“Well, of course I am,” he replied. “I’m an old man here, compared to everyone else.”

“I meant the suit and, I don’t know, just your overall look,” the little thing said. She glanced at her shoes. “I don’t mind older men.”

“How old are you?”

“19.”

“Yeah, stay away from older men, for a while,” Caz said. He was trying to scan the crowd for Jade. The pounding music, the buzz of chatter, the overlapping pattern of bodies, it all created a kind of screen he had to pierce. Even his ability to pick out the smell of her sweat and soap was overpowered now by this tiny doll’s perfume — some kind of vanilla and burnt sugar mix.

A finger hooked through his belt loop, tugging him back. The doll was juggling two small plastic cups of an amber substance in her other hand.

“Want a drink?” she asked.

Hunger

She was getting closer to him. Caz could smell that scrape still bleeding from her wrist. He was already faint from hunger. He needed to get her out of here.

The best method, he decided, was to scare her.

“So what if I am?” he asked, before smiling his widest and sharpest smile. “And if I am, may I remind you you’re currently backed into a corner by someone much stronger and faster than you, Jade?”

Mistake. You made a mistake, you fool.

He knew it as soon as the words left his lips. Don’t ever piss off a witch. His left ankle left the ground first, carried upward by a root looping around it, followed by his right.
