The epees hissed through the thick, humid night air before they met in a bellicose clank. Though the audience would have been given quite the spectacle, the auditorium was empty, and the only sounds urgent footsteps, strained grunts, and cavalier laughter when a well-prepared strike eventually hit the opponent. At an hour this late, no one cared about spectating two men battling each other in a friendly game of fencing neither of them was willing to lose. It had been a spontaneous idea born when one glass of wine had turned into three and the Duke of Suffolk, known to enjoy a good challenge, had accepted the young man´s suggestion of a little locking of horns. His contender was quite new to court; Charles could think of a few occasions he had seen him around those last weeks, and that alone was reason enough to agree and teach him a few things about court order. Besides, he did not look much like competition anyway. Skinny, almost a head shorter, with a face like a babe in the woods. Handsome, some would say, but Charles did not let his eyes linger too long to confirm such insignificant observations. So, he was a pretty fella. What about it. But much to the Duke´s surprise, he was not just that, but now putting up more resistance than his slight appearance would suggest, and served extraordinary skill on both offence and defence.
