«vanessa hesitated, then put a light hand on his arm. cooper felt a wave of something unexpected. he felt… drawn to her in a way he might have once assumed was sexual attraction in his youth. now, more in touch with the nuances of desire, he wasn’t sure what it was. a calming, sweet pleasure to be near her. to feel trusted by her. attachment because she’d saved him from the river? some misplaced affection resulting from his current emotional rawness.»

«he had the weirdest desire to move toward his father, to touch him, but ed looked so vulnerable he couldn’t predict what would happen if he did. he didn’t think he could take it if ed got any more emotional or, shit, even cried. that’s something they didn’t warn you about getting older, seeing your parents age too, seeing them as people, sad and afraid and haunted by their own mistakes.»

“Truthfully his weekend plans consisted of catching some old noir films on TV and drinking a couple of bottles of wine with his cat, Boogie. Well, he’d be drinking. Boogie would be judging. But Boogie tended to judge everything he did. Even if he did go out and manage to find a guy he wanted to bring home for the night, Boogie would be appalled and annoyed. It was his basic look. Not that Cooper was projecting. Much.”
