Author’s note: I do not write for the One Chicago fandom anymore (maybe in the future if I find my way back to them but I honestly don’t have time to do so) this is a post long overdue (wrote this in June) and I’m soso sorry for the delay. Hope you enjoy!

“Thank god you exist, honestly,” you said, stepping out of the fancy car your best friend is in possession. There are rarely people who would agree to be a first-class Uber for someone who smashed their car into a pulp. For months, the deal would go on, and Connor, if his wish for helping suddenly evaporated, would have no option but to continue to drive you around.

There were unspoken truths between you, truths neither side wanted to believe in fear of them not being well…true.

“What? Scared you wouldn’t find a decent chauffeur?” Asked Connor Rhodes, flicking on the locks of his car with his keys.

“I was thinking more Uber like,” you teased. “But chauffeur works too.”

His chuckle left a familiar buzz in your body. The usual: a racy heart, goosebumps and butterflies.

“Only you can demolish your car and act like you gave him a scratch,” Connor commented, holding the door open for you.

You brushed past him with a smirk, waiting until he too was inside the hospital before you began your move. “It’s a sign from the above, Connor.”

“What’s a sign from the above?”

That specific voice couldn’t be drowned out by the ER, even if one wanted it to be. Ava Bekker, a secondary CT fellow that spent most of her work hours with none other than Connor.

What could you say, you were a territorial woman. Though because Connor and you still labeled as friends, there was nothing you could do to prevent her claws from sinking into him.

You gave her your best disinterested look, accompanied by a polite smile. “That I should finally invest in a Mercedes.”

“Whaat? But I liked your Mini Cooper!” Connor feigned disappointment, scrunching his brows up adorably.

You went as far as to squeeze his cheek, all in good vibes. Ava’s eyes dug into your body, but you ignored it the best in your ability. “Anyway, I should get going. It’s Sunday, so there’s bound to be kids around here.”

“Wouldn’t want to be in your shoes,” Connor joked.

“Yeah, me neither.” Ava agreed.

You looked at her from the corner of your eye. Talk about a hidden meaning. “Okay, you two. No need to go off on us pediatric mortals.”

Your best friend laughed, pulling you in for a quick hug like he always did now that you didn’t spend much time brushing shoulders at work since he ditched the ER life for a CT fellowship. Connor gave you your jacket back, one that he was holding since you left his car, the gentleman, oblivious to the fact he was making Ava the real third wheel.

You felt victorious as Connor looked into your eyes, “Don’t leave without me.”

His jokes were the highlight of your day. You spoke up after he and Ava started to walk away, “Yeah, right! Like I have anything to leave with.”

Connor’s wink was the last thing you saw before he became a ghost.

When you decided to take a step back from pursuing your feeling for Connor, you felt as though a big part of your life suddenly felt odd. In the weirdest way, the slow-burn that was you showing truly how you felt for him was missed more than you expected it to be.

You watched from afar as the fellowship rivalry Connor and Ava were in possession of grew into a friendship, an alliance.

The car rides grew less frequent, due to you blackmailing your ER colleagues into driving you places, and when they did happen there was rarely any talk on your side.

Today, out of all of them, no one at the ER was free enough to drive you to your dentist appointment.

The fact didn’t go unnoticed by Connor.

He grabbed your sleeve before you could sneak out the back door and fetch a bus.

You were so stunned you couldn’t speak, instead letting the best friend drag you out like a doll. Your pompom covered hat was just hanging in your hands, as you were (as mentioned) too stunned to put it on. Ava Bekker could be heard behind you both, “Hey Connor, I was wondering-”

“Not now, Ava,” he said sternly, not turning around to look at her as he rounded his car with you in tow. Connor opened the door with precision and stuffed you in gently yet firmly enough for you to let out a yelp.

Your door smacked closed, and you couldn’t hear what he muttered to her as he jogged around the SUV to the driver’s seat.

Cold air rushed in as he crammed himself inside next to you, disappearing when he closed the door behind him. Connor flicked the car on, maneuvering out of his usual parking space with ease and aggression to match.

Not knowing what to do, you leaned in and quietly turned on the heating. Your cold feet were immediately enveloped with warmth.

You watched him from the corner of your eye as a smile tugged at his handsome features. It blinked with familiarity, “Why are you avoiding me?”

His question caught you off guard, “Um, what?”

Connor gave you a look, “Don’t play dumb with me. You’ve been avoiding me, and I want to know why?”

“Not letting you drive me around constantly doesn’t mean I’m avoiding you,” you told him, hating how your voice came out in the form of a squeak.

“It means exactly that,” Connor said with a little more decibel in his voice, “You don’t get to just back out of a deal. Not when-”

Then his voice evened out, and your brows came down into a frown, “Not when what?”

“Nothing.” He said quickly. Too quickly.

You waited until he took a turn to question him further, “You obviously wanted to say some-”

“Not when I love you!”

His confession was so out of place you had to blink back twice before regaining yourself, “Wow.”

“Yeah, wow,” he mocked, focused on the road because what better thing to do after confessing in a moving car, “Look we’ve been doing this dance for a long time now, and I know Ava put you off. I don’t want you to think she is even remotely important to me. I’m an idiot and-”

“Connor,” you cut him off, “Stop the car.”

“Stop the car?” He asked you, looking as surprised and confused as ever. “You want me to stop the car?”

“Yes, you idiot! Stop the car, so I can return my feelings!”

Never did you see someone park so fast before.

Connor wielded the steering wheel like it was a sword, maneuvering with impatient speed around the parking spaces. It took him a minute to turn off the car completely.

And then you pounced.

It felt as good as is you thought it would.

Kissing him was like a second nature. You pulled, and he came, you lead, and he followed. His hand found your cheek, and it caressed it until you were a pool of bottled-up emotions at his feet. The need for air came after a while, and you pulled away from him, flushed and with love in your eyes.

“I love you too.”

And then your whisper became an afterthought when lips clashed together again.
