Out of everyone who would come to the defense of your new tattoo, you never thought it would be your stepfather.
Ever since he joined the family, Getou’s kept the conversations cordial, but minimal. Polite how do you do’s and the willingness to help you out with your car troubles, but never anything more. So when he stepped up to defend the ink that had peeked through your dress sleeve as you were about to leave for New Year’s gala, you were taken aback.
“It’s just a small one on her arm,” he said, placing a hand on your mother’s shoulder to soothe her. “She’s a grown up, she’s allowed to express herself how she likes. And, it’s easily concealable if you are worried about making an impression tonight.” Her tirade ended mid sentence with her new husband’s touch, trading whatever words she had for a “wear a longer sleeved dress instead.”
The drive to the party is silent, but your mother comes back to life when she’s surrounded by her coworkers, introducing her picture perfect family and then milling away to gossip. She leaves you alone, letting you push leftover pasta around your plate and scroll through Instagram as you wait for the night to end.
It’s Getou who once again comes to save you. He returns to the table with two glasses of champagne in hand, raising one towards you with a grin.
