Enchanted chapter 13

Then (sometime around freshmen year)

“Chris, Chris, I need help.” Selene pleaded through the phone holding back her laughter. Selene put her phone aside trying to collect herself to tell Chris she forgot how to make a sandwich, but when she picked the phone up he had already hung up. “Chris?? Crap!” Selene tossed her placed her phone on her nightstand, he had probably heard her laugh and knew she was goofing off. Oh, well, Selene looked over at her phone considering calling Chris again. “Didn’t pick up?” Zack leaned into her room. “He did, he just hung up.” Selene retorted. “Of course he’d pick up for you.” Zack spoke nonchalantly. Chris had spent most of his time with Becca, and getting a hold of him was nearly impossible. Selene squinted her eyes unsure of what Zack was implying, before turning her attention back to her main problem. “ZACK!” Selene dragged out his name. “Please, make me a sandwich. I’m telling Zack, I forgot how to make one. PLEASE!” Selene pleaded again not wanting to leave the comfort of her bed, let alone room. Zack just shook his head and laughed. “Tell you what, I’ll make you one, if you come hang out with us.” Before Chris had fully gone under Becca spell he had been working to make Selene more sociable, especially with their roommates. “No thanks.” Selene passed continuing to lay down. “Alright.” Zack shrugged leaving her room. She tried to convince herself to get up and make a sandwich, but her efforts were futile.

An hour passed before Selene gave up her notion to make a sandwich, when she thought about it, she wasn’t that hungry. Selene turned over letting out a yawn deciding to turn in early. “Selene, come quick!” Kaitlyn rushed into her room, gathering Selene up. “What happened?” Selene asked, putting her slippers on. “It’s Chris.” Selene hastily followed behind Kaitlyn into the kitchen where Chris sat on the ground. “I can’t look, tell me how my phone is.” Chris sat on the kitchen floor, hissing in pain with blood upon his arm and smeared on his jeans. “Chris what happened?” Selene’s eyes widened in horror trying to figure out why he was bleeding. “Are you okay?” Chris looked upon Selene. “Me?” Selene looked confused, noticing Chris’s blood on the ground. “Crap!” Selene slapped her hand against her face. “Chris, I’m fine. I was only playing, I just wanted a sandwich.” Selene looked down embarrassed. “Where’s my phone?” Chris asked with his phone right beside him. “He’s drunk, I told you to just make the sandwich yourself.” Abbie commented, crossing her arms. Abbie had walked past her room the first time she asked Zack and stuck her nose into it. Selene rolled her eyes focusing on Chris she hadn’t really noticed he was drunk. “I wouldn’t have done it if I knew you were drunk.” Selene’s head fell down, she considered hugging him but he was on the ground hurt because of her, all she could do was wait for her friend to yell at her. “Where’s my phone?” Chris asked again, scanning right past his phone.

Chris quickly clenched his teeth trying to reach out for his bleeding arm only to shout in pain letting his other arm rest at his side. “I’ll get a rag.” Selene excused herself wetting a rag to clean off Chris’s blood. Poor Chris, this was all her fault, he was her one friend she managed to make and she screwed it up all with one phone call.Selen quickly rang out the rag rushing back to Chris’s side to lightly dab away the blood. “What exactly happened?” Zack asked. “I raced over here, and tripped up the stairs. My phone cracked, I think part of it is in me.” Chris picked up his phone showing the crack. “And I’m not drunk, I’m just happy.” Chris giggled. Chris frowned looking over at Penny. “Why so sad?” Chris asked, through gritted teeth. “I didn’t know Chris, I wouldn’t have called you if I knew.” Selene spoke low, her face turning red as she tried not to cry. “Hey.” Chris spoke capturing Selene’s attention. “It’s okay, but you definitely owe me, I’m thinking tacos every Tuesday, my treat.” Chris weakly smiled.

Now

Selene kept quiet trying to take in everything Zig was telling her, he had listened to her when she told him her side. Selene had told him more than she wanted, it didn’t just stop at how she wanted to hangout with him and Chris told her why it was a bad idea, she also told him why she was so nervous around him. Now Zig spoke, contradicting everything Chris had said, everything he had done. This wasn’t the Chris she knew, the Chris she knew would never make her feel bad about herself, or at least the old Chris wouldn’t. Sure she had noticed some change in her friend, but this, this was just too low for Chris. “Can you just stop!” Selene spoke up rubbing the bridge of her nose. “It doesn’t make sense, I know Chris…..He would never…..He just wouldn’t.” Selene struggled to complete her sentence. If Zig was telling the truth, then that would mean Chris had lied to her, and worse manipulated her. What if Zig was just playing her, Selene had doubted whether Chris was telling her the truth when he told her Zig liked to play games with foolish girls, then later he’d used them and no longer spoke to them once he had all his fun. “How do I know you’re not lying?” Selene studied Zig’s face, the one constant, was Chris, she wasn’t prepared to throw him away because of some silly crush. No, she wouldn’t throw her friendship away for some crush. “Look, I don’t know what kind of sick game you’re playing but keep me out of it you jerk.” Selene wished she had thought of something more clever but she was just so mad and so confused, she wanted to believe Zig, heck she pretty much did, but she didn’t want to believe the alternative. “I’m not playing any games, I like you that’s all. It just seems odd that Chris is telling me one thing and whispering something else in your ears.” Zig commented. “He’s my friend, and he was just trying to warn me. I should have known a guy like you could never like someone like me.” Selene quickly gathered her items, shoving them in her bag all at once, whispering the last part so low she did think he had heard. “See this is what I mean he’s got you thinking like this. Selene I.” Zig reached out grabbing her backpack to turn her around but Selene quickly stepped away. “Get your hands off me, you no good thug.” She shouted storming out of the cafe.

If there was one person who could clear this all up, it was Chris. With balls of fist to her side she stormed across campus, mumbling to herself as she headed towards Chris’s frat house. Each passing step Selene thought back to her conversation with Zig. Selene’s face heated up thinking of back to Zig. Zig hadn’t spoken ill of her, in fact he had done the opposite, when Selene mentioned all her insecurities, everything that Chris agreed put her at a disadvantage with Zig, he didn’t agree at all, he reached out and held her hand and disagreed. Zig hadn’t spoken one bad word about her, only of Chris, but as Zig continued to talk it was quite clear where the trouble landed. Selene hated what Zig was implying, what she feared was true, but she wouldn’t accept anything until she spoke to Chris. Hopefully then, he’d be able to clear it all up as an misunderstanding.
