Sagittarius is the astrological sign which governs people born between November 23rd and December 21st in the modern zodiac. The name is Latin for the archer and it is commonly represented as a centaur drawing a bow Sagittarians are believed to be jovial, optimistic, honest, intellectual and freedom loving, however sometimes they may take this to the extreme and become careless and blindly optimistic and restless.
Known since Babylonian times when it was pictured as the god Nergal a strange centaur like creature with wings, with a scorpion tail as well as a horse tail and with both a panther head and a human head. The Sumerians also knew the constellation but to them it was Pabilsag which translates as forefather. And to the Greeks the constellation represented the story of Chiron who is said to have changed himself into a horse to escape his jealous wife Rhea, or Bellerophon from the stories of Pegasus. In some later Norse stories the constellation was associated with Thor.
Scientifically Sagittarius is a very interesting constellation as within it is contained many star clusters and nebulae. This is due to its proximity to the centre of our galaxy the milky way, and amongst the many features is the well known and easily recognisable swan or horseshoe nebula. The constellation is best visible in the early evening during August.

Did you know that all my constellation pieces come with a little info card full of science, history, mythology and astrology? Do you have a favourite bit of constellation trivia? The plough or big dipper is my favourite, it was associated with runaway slaves in 19th century American who were said to “follow the drinking gourd” to the north and freedom, and was used on a flag for Irish nationalism having been flown in by the Irish Citizen Army in the Easter rising 1916.
