i’ve seen a lot of posts floating around the witchy side of tumblr warning about specific things like damaging your crystals & rocks with water, and potentially releasing toxins, and herbal supplements potentially interacting with other medications. since it can’t hurt to reiterate, and since i haven’t seen an all-encompassing post on the subject, i thought i would add:
PLEASE RESEARCH ANY AND ALL MATERIALS YOU USETHOROUGHLY, INCLUDING HOW IT WILL INTERACT WITH YOUR BODY, WHEN USED WITH OTHER MATERIALS, AND WHEN LEFT UNSUPERVISED IN NATURE.
this includes literally any material you want to ingest or mix with any other material, such as:
- herbs, flowers, & plants
- woods, bark, & leaves
- crystals, gems, & rocks
- herbal supplements, minerals & vitamins
- foods & spices
- liquids like alcohol, oil, or water
- essential oils
- plastics, papers, & glass
- chemicals & solutions
- anything you want to burn
- anything you want to dispose of or leave as an offering in nature, bury, throw in running water or flush down the toilet, leave outside unattended, etc.
when you handle materials you’re unfamiliar with and incorporate them into your craft without the proper research, you’re not only putting yourself at risk, but also any other persons or animals that could potentially come into contact with your ritual or spell components.
the new orange peel extract all purpose house cleaner recipe you read could poison your cats; the spell jar you just buried in your front yard may never naturally degrade, or leak chemicals from plastics or dyes, or get dug up during sewer or electrical maintenance or future occupants; your favorite red marker for cursing might be toxic to burn.
it can even be as simple as being allergic to a material you’ve never used before. always be sure to test whether or not you’re allergic to a new herb, food, or other ingredient, preferably multiple times, before you incorporate it into rituals or spells. even if you don’t have any known allergies!
