The Trinity Hospital, Leicester was founded in 1331 by the then Earl of Lancaster and Leicester as an almshouse for fifty poor and infirm persons. In 1653 the Leicester Corporation gave the hospital a great cauldron for cooking pottage. The cauldron, known as ‘The Porridge Pot’ is still there.

The old building was taken over by De Montfort University and the Trinity Hospital opened a new home just down the road. The mosaic was commissioned as a visual link between the old and new buildings.
