Raw appeal

It was one of his most romantic + elegant roles but also one of his grittiest — Eddie Redmayne as a World War I soldier in Birdsong, photographed in Hungary in 2011 by Kalpesh Lathigra.

This BBC two-parter, which aired in 2012 + still streams, is our personal favorite for the heartbreaking depth Eddie showed in love + war.

Point by point summary of Newt’s character development over the three Fantastic Beasts films — brought to life with sensitivity and strength by Eddie Redmayne.

Eyes, sighs

Photographer Jeff Vespa captured the luminous green of Eddie Redmayne’s eyes in a unique way in this 2012 shoot during the Les Miserables promotion season. Suddenly, Eddie’s oddball characters from indie films and his period roles had morphed into a romantic lead. Oh, Marius!

Every frame a treasure

One of my favorite Eddie Redmayne sessions, this one from 2011 by Colin Bell, used in photo spreads and bits + pieces ever since. Breathtaking good looks + a range of expressions as a treat for this Man Crush Monday.

Double threat

We loved this 2014 Robert Maxwell photo of Eddie Redmayne for a Variety cover session…but also this prescient assessment from Working Title co-chair Eric Fellner: “What’s really interesting about Eddie is that what turns him on are really tough, tricky roles. But he’s an incredibly good-looking man. So he can be a movie star too.”

In the intervening 8 years, Eddie’s proven both.

For Freckle Friday.

Bunty behind-the-scenes

Victoria Yeates shares personal photos to her Instagram from a late-night Secrets of Dumbledore shoot. Repost @victoriayeates1: “This was a very late long rainy shoot but it was always fun working with these gorgeous people…and they all made the time fly! #eddieredmayne #callumturner #jessicawilliams #secretsofdumbledore #harrypotter #handwarmers #hotwaterbottles #buntygirl”

Among the wild things

A decade apart

For Throwback Thursday, Eddie Redmayne as Richard II at the Donmar Warehouse in London 2011 + in 2021 in his long-awaited return to theater as The Emcee in Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club. Both rehearsals were captured by the eminent chronicler of London theater, Marc Brenner.

Art imitating…modeling?

Eddie Redmayne enjoying a beverage at Hog’s Head as a stylish Newt Scamander in Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore reminded us of two of Eddie’s most memorable modeling gigs.

Middle—for Omega watches (our longtime profile photo), and bottom—for Mr. Porter.

Bless this man. I hope he knows how much immense joy this dinky little dance of his brings to us.

Seeing double

NEWT IN THIS LOOK

Thanks for capturing Newt standing still during these scenes where we finally get to see him at work in the wild. There was a very Indiana Jones vibe to his movements!

Casual elegance on tour

Another from the Japan portfolio of Eddie Redmayne style looks from Petra Sellge, who handled grooming + makeup for his promotional and Omega watches appearances.

He was there to promote Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore.

New York whirlwind

Nobuhiro Hosoki with Cinema Daily US brings us these delightful photos + excerpts from the NYC premiere event of Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore. The film is in its opening weekend in North America.

Imagining young Newt

Back before they actually cast the role in Crimes of Grindelwald, this was how I imagined a Hogwarts-aged Newt Scamander, using a youthful photo of Eddie Redmayne with an inset of grownup Newt. A Friday Flashback.

‘I think it might be the coldest I’ve ever been…’

Retro Eddie

Sure, it might be a bit of a backhanded compliment: “Eddie Redmayne — the ’80s are calling.” But his travel ensemble, worn as he jetted to Japan to promote Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, did notch him the fourth spot on this week’s British GQ best-dressed list. (Photos by Jun Sato)
