She stirred from a pained deep slumber to find a man sitting aside her bed staring at her curiously. In defense against this unknown stranger she attempted to jolt up only to feel agony radiate throughout her body.

“I wouldn’t move lass you took quite the fall. I took pity upon you, don’t make me regret that kindness,” he remarked in a light-hearted manner, but the stern look said that should she cause him trouble he wouldn’t hesitate to withdraw his mercy.

“Where am I? How long have I been out?” She strained looking round not recognizing the man before her or the ship she was now aboard.

“Aboard the Jackdaw.” He remarked with a swell of pride then added, “You have been unconscious for 3 days now.”

She had not heard of the ship but she panicked when she realized that this meant she had failed her mission and was far from her brethren. She also knew her necklace could well reveal who and what she was. She grasped for the chain about her neck and felt relief when she felt the cold metal under her grasping fingers. She sought to hide the Templar cross beneath her shirt as covertly as she could under his unwavering gaze.

He noticed her attempt to hide what he already knew to be a Templar cross, he had seen them before. He wondered if he should press her about the observatory but given her current condition maybe it wouldn’t be the best time. Or perhaps her pain would make her honest. “No need to hide it, I already know what you are. I have seen this cross before.”

Her eyes widened, she wasn’t sure if this was in her favor or not. “I will not betray my brothers.” She assured him to preempt the questions she was sure were coming.

“What makes you think I would ask that? I care only for a prize and its worth.”

“If this prize is one my fellow Templars covet I cannot aid you. I thank you for your aid but I am afraid I cannot return your kindness.” She added tentatively.

He could see she was genuine in her thanks, and assured in holding her silence. “I may change your mind yet lass. Is your name something you will tell me?” He pressed feeling a mild curiosity spark about her.

“Jessica but the majority of people call me Jess. And my good Samaritan what would be your name?”

“Edward.” He smiled devilishly.

She hadn’t really noticed him at first more concerned with assessing if he was a threat, he didn’t seem to have any dark intent and if he did he hid it too well. She noticed now how his eyes lit up as his smile reached them, giving  him a mischievous look. His skin was sun kissed which deepened the lines forming about his eyes and mouth. His stubble gave him a rugged look, his scars showed him to be a fighter but his smile and lingering gaze spoke of him being a lover. He could definitely be trouble of all kinds she thought.

She returned his smile.

“You’re not exactly the image of a Templar.” Edward mused aloud. His eyes catching hers to gauge her reaction.

“Oh and what does a Templar look like?” She returned with a sly grin.

She seemed amused. Her dark eyes looked gentle when she smiled.

“The ones I have met have been men, and rather full of their own importance. You seem to be neither.”

“I assume that is meant as a compliment.” She raised an eye brow quizzically.

“Aye.” He replied simply knowing that given her injuries she would be laid up for weeks.

He did not wish to reveal too much of his goal, nor give in to old vices. He had to recall the reason he came out here, and it wasn’t to romance damsels in distress.  He wasn’t sure whether it was conscience or self-interest that had led him to save her. He would certainly have time to find out his own motivations, but until it became necessary he wouldn’t press her further.

“I shall leave you to rest, and recover.”

He left her hoping that she would see sense and aid him, or that her aid would not be something he required as given her loyalties it would be no easy matter to gain information, and he wasn’t given to torture such an ugly business. But he thought as he stepped into the sun that he may just be worrying needlessly, but that weary edge remained as he took the helm.
