My bookbinding teacher recently had a client bring her a book for restoration, found in the street by chance, abandoned on a trash can. It turned out to be a hollow book made for the 1889 World’s Fair, to house a collection of pen nibs (whoever owned it was diligent about it, there are 500+ of them!) I particularly like the one at the top of the close-up picture, shaped like the Eiffel tower (which was built for the 1889 Fair) (apparently we immediately started selling tourists Eiffel tower-shaped objects and never looked back)

This modest reproduction of the Eiffel Tower was built in Summer 1889 for the festivities of San Lorenzo in Lavapiés, one of the most popular neighborhoods of Madrid. Made of wood and cloth, it stood 21 mt. tall, with a platform for a music band. On top of the structure, two spotlights illuminated the street. The citizens of Madrid, always prone to give a nickname to everyone and every single thing, from kings to waste bins, immediatly baptized it as la Torre Infiel (that’s it, the Infidel Tower). An ultracatholic newspaper (in contradiction with the wooden tower’s sobriquet) took the matter perhaps too seriously celebrating Madrid’s parody of the ungodly centenary of the French Revolution. The little known bastard sister of the Parisian landmark didn’t survive for a long time.
As City of Lover came, I had a major empty space. I was inspired to put the Eiffel Tower there. The show was amazing and I’m constantly listening to the live tracks over and over on @spotify but, again, I was afraid of architecture. I’ve never drawn any architecture in my life, so being able to draw it was really a surprise to myself. Again, this was the challenge that my Lover painting was giving me.
