The tiny Elk Street in Lower Manhattan behind City Hall was so named because the Elks organization was founded there in 1867. The Street runs only two block from Chambers to Duane. The Duane Street end of Elk Street houses the African Burial Ground National Monument, a site that contains the remains off over 400 Africans buried here in the 17th and 18th centuries
