Discussion Question: Chapter 15

Ares describes America as “the best place since Sparta”. What does he mean by that and do you agree with him?

So I guess the clear analogy here is comparing the military might and fascination of both Sparta and the USA which I definitely think is a very interesting message in this book aimed at American kids, and I do kind of agree with it?

I mean look, I’m not American, but from an outsiders perspective the American adoration of the military has always seemed bizarre to me. Veterans day, heavily advertised veterans discounts, even at magic kingdom the flag on main street is taken down by a veteran every single day

Not that these are bad things, it’s just odd from an outsider’s perspective. Like I would never meet someone from the army and say ‘thank you for your service’ because the military just isn’t treated with the same reverence over here

So from that basic standpoint, yeah I kind of agree. But if you’re looking at it from outside of that very narrow viewpoint of 'they both love the military’ I’m not sure the two are that comparable?

I mean it’s going to be hard to compare the USA to any ancient greek city state because it’s a city state. Sparta is this little region of Greece whereas the USA is basically the size of Europe and so trying to compare this giant diverse hodgepodge that is the USA to any city state is kind of futile

Both Sparta and America have more to them than military prowess and honestly outside of that, the constitution, societal structure, economy etc are not very similar at all

Final note, while I was writing this I couldn’t stop thinking about this horrible histories song and thought I’d share

So, cross this off the ‘yeah we all saw this coming FGO’ bingo but one of the Trung Sisters is a siscon. Trung Nhi specifically.

Not in a Dioscuri jokey way where it’s like ‘haha, Castor acts like a siscon but that’s just because he has absolutely no social skills and is a bit too upfront about his care for Pollux’ and it’s playing off the memed, exaggerated relationship that the Uchida siblings (the Dioscuri VA’s) already have.

but as in the profile literally just says that ‘she’s a siscon and while she looks serious she’s actually just constantly thinking about how cute her sister is all the time’.

Yeah, I think I’m done with FGO. Their antics are becoming predictable and they obviously don’t care about this kind of criticism.
