More like a Bird

Ferdinand von Aegir, the most recent addition to the Blue Lions class, shields Mercedes from what would have been a nasty injury at the Battle of the Eagle and Lion. He claims it was his duty as a noble to protect her, but is that the full truth?

The Battle of the Eagle and Lion was tense. The Black Eagles, Golden Deer, and Blue Lions all were giving their all, almost fighting like their lives depended on it. Mercedes has been staying to the back, doing her best to keep up and heal her injured classmates.

Among the Blue Lions fighting on the front lines was none other than Ferdinand von Aegir. He gripped his lance tightly as he fought off students of his rival class. He took notice of how Lysithea of the Golden Deer had a Miasma spell aimed aright at Mercedes, and without a second thought, he jumped in the way and took the blow for her. Everything faded to black.

When Ferdinand next awoke, he was in the infirmary with Manuela and Mercedes both standing over him. Manuela smiled. “Good, you’re finally waking up.”

Ferdinand groaned. “What…what happened…?”

Mercedes put a gentle hand over Ferdinand’s. “You saved my life, Ferdinand. And I can’t thank you enough. I simply must find a way to repay you.”

Ferdinand shook his head, a light dusting of pink forming across his cheeks and the bridge of his nose. “Nonsense, it was my duty as a noble. I’m always happy to protect you.”

It was Mercedes’ turn to blush, hearing that. “Well…will you at least let me treat you to lunch?” she asked, tucking a lock of hair behind her ear.

Ferdinand smiled. “Well…after such a kind offer, it would certainly be rude to refuse.”

Yes, it was his duty to protect Mercedes. It was a duty he accepted more than happily.
