Julian changed his outlook on health and fitness and got back in shape with the help of a Fitbit ChargeHR, and then a Surge- here’s his latest update
We are very proud of our #fitbitfriend Julian. Weighing in at over 16 stone, Julian wanted to get fit and healthy, and change his lifestyle for lasting results. Determination and a Fitbit ChargeHR helped Julian get back on track.
Julian says: “…..I was over 16 stone. Now under 12 stone and I hadn’t run since high school, had never rode a road bike til 4 months ago. I set myself a challenge in May to do a Triathlon in aid of the NSPCC”.
My Super-Sprint Pool Based Triathlon in October 2016 (200m pool, 20k bike, 2.5k run) really inspired me to do more Triathlons and ‘lake ones’ as I kind of didn’t feel like a true triathlete being in the pool.
Personal Best
I signed up to do Blenheim Palace Triathlon on 4th June 2017 to raise money for Bloodwise.
After a minor leg operation in December I took a few week off the activities + Xmas I was a few pounds up, but I knew once I got back into things that would sort itself out.
Since January this year, I have done several 5k runs included a new sub 25 minute Personal Best, as well as running with a slower friend to her achieve her first PB in a year, that was very rewarding!
I have run a couple of 10k’s as well as another Mud Run (and walking steps of course). I have joined the Evesham Vale triathlon Club as I want to do more Triathlons and at the same time being member of a friendly club I can draw off others experience and knowledge.
Once April came, I was out on the bike and in the pool to practice for the Triathlon.
Open Water Challenge
Knowing the need to do an ‘Open Water’ swim this time and nearly 4 times longer at 750m, I joined the local Open Water Swimming Club run by Evesham Vale Triathletes. The swimming club is at Ragley Hall. If your ever in Warwickshire it is a lovely place to visit!
I bought a wetsuit and jumped in at a lovely 11 degrees at the end of April. Oh my God – the shock. I struggled to swim 400m even though I’d been consistently doing 1000m plus in the pool.
Open Water is a challenge that should not be underestimated, totally different to Pool Swimming. More physically and mentally demanding.
I decided I need a pre-Blenheim Triathlon, so entered a local event scheduled for 21st May. On my 4th session (16th April) I successfully swam the 750m loop non-stop with no problems.
Then I competed in the Phoenix Sprint Triathlon – 750m Open Water Swim – 23K Bike – 5K Off-road Run, and finished in 1hr 48m with good bike & run times, but for sure I need to bring my swimming on still.
Ultimately I would like to do an Ironman 70.3 (or half Ironman in 2018 and possibly an Olympic length Triathlon before 2017 season ends.
An Emotional Day
I was feeling quite emotional on May 21st 2017. It was a reminder of how I’ve turned my life around, and the amazing support that my wife and kids give me.
As my Instagram post says – “Its been a great journey. The last 18 months has been amazing. Back in Oct 2015 I bought a #fitbit and life changed forever.
I got moving. I lost a lot of weight. I started to challenge myself. I was tired of being tired, backache, knee & ankle problems.
Over 4 stone lighter. I swim I cycle I run - and sometimes I do all 3 back to back.
Today was my toughest challenge - training for an Open Water Triathlon hasn’t always been easy. But so worth it. I love my medals. It’s a reminder of what I’ve done - Mud Run’s, Triathlon’s, Runs and A Bike Sportive. As well as lots of Park Runs The kids also love shiny things, and I hope I can inspire them.”
What’s Next?
I CAN’T WAIT until the Blenheim Palace Triathlon in 2 weeks. I’ve already raised over £500 for Bloodwise.
Thank you Fitbit for being my constant motivator! I am looking forward to trying out the new Charge 2 alongside my trusty Surge, and the Flex 2 when I am in the pool training.
I am looking to raise money for Bloodwiseby taking part in the famous Blenheim Palace Sprint Triathlon.
The event will consist of a 750m Lake Swim, then a 20km Bike Ride, finishing off with a 5km Run.
