the chell & gordon one is based on their dancing in “count to three,” and the freemance one is based on me looking at the scenery during the drive to white forest and imagining how nice it would be for them to picnic there :)
I think it speaks to valve’s skill that they were able to construct such a compelling dynamic between Alyx and Gordon when one of them acts only at the discretion of the player and never says a word
