Keisuke knows better than anyone what happens when you get into your own head too much during a race, especially one as dangerous as this one. Weather conditions aren’t great tonight; there’s fog rolling in, spreading up the mountain like a poison haze and leaving damp everywhere it touches. The mountain pass itself is dangerous too, with 55 hairpins and a lot of overgrowth that partially obstructs the view, especially at speed. The crown will go to whoever has the quickest reflexes and the most courage, tonight, on the downhill.

It’s not that he’s worried per se. He knows, maybe better than anyone else on the street, that Takumi is an incredibly capable driver. It isn’t often someone can come along out of nowhere and destroy every one of Keisuke’s perceptions, reshape the way he thinks about what it means to be a racer. Takumi did that. Takumi does that, every time he gets into the driver’s seat of his Hachiroku.

Keisuke is strapped in and watching Takumi drive and there is a building heat scorching through his veins, his fingertips are itching with want — and there is so much that he wants. He wants to race him, wants to drive side-by-side with him, wants to kiss him in his bucket seat and feel the gear shift dig into his leg and all of the cracks in Takumi’s dry lips. He wants to feel Takumi’s hands just as confident on him as they are gripping the wheel.

He knows that if they actually race now, it’ll be his lights in Takumi’s mirror and the prospect of losing has never thrilled him more.
