A NOTE FROM THE CREATOR:
Hello everyone! Alice here, the writer and artist of Heartstopper. Hope everyone’s doing okay during this weird and scary time!
As you know, I always include content warnings at the beginning of updates that I feel may include some triggering content. Well, you may start to see quite a lot of those this chapter, and I wanted to write a longer note explaining why, what you can expect, and why nobody needs to be scared or stressed about the future of Heartstopper.
Chapter 5 of Heartstopper is going to be largely focused on Charlie’s eating disorder and other mental health issues. I have planned this from the very beginning of the comic.
Heartstopper is known for being an upbeat, happy, and peaceful comic, but I have always explored serious themes in this story - the abusive relationship with Ben, homophobia and biphobia, bullying, and the struggles of coming out. But, in all these themes, I like to focus the story on the positive and show how our characters overcome these obstacles and struggles.
The mental illness storyline will be like that too. We will follow Nick and Charlie as they figure out how to help Charlie. The focus will be on Charlie’s journey towards recovery and healing, with the help of Nick, as both of them start to realise what love REALLY means - it means being there for that person, even in the worst of times. The upbeat, happy, peaceful, and positive vibe of Heartstopper is NOT ending. This chapter will only make N&C stronger together.
So please take this as your official content warning for the rest of this chapter, as it will contain discussions of eating disorders, depression, anxiety, and self-harm. But please note: I will not ever show Charlie’s body at a low weight. There will be no on-page self-harm in the story. Much of the worst period of Charlie’s mental health struggles won’t even be covered - it will be skipped over and then shown briefly through flashbacks. The focus of this part of Heartstopper will be on recovery, support, and healing.
