it has been brought to my attention that there are some of you out there who are unaware of the magic that is the goalie in hockey. goalies are an interesting topic to discuss, because most of them are so far off their nut that they can’t even find the shell. allow me to explain.

let’s first talk about the role of the goalie. this person is the one who, by choice, stands in front of a net (or post, or can, or whatever type of goal, because goalies in street hockey games and shinny are no less goalies for not being pros) and does their level best to put parts of their body between said net and a flying disc (or ball, or whatever, see above re: “goalies are still goalies”). they choose this path. they look at the net, and they have a thought that’s something like, “you know what, self, that net looks like it needs a friend, and that friend could be you, self.”

(warnings for mentions of vomiting. after some thought and some outside input, i linked to the really graphic injury photos, so while there’s some discussion, there are no injury pictures in here.)

Oh gosh, this is excellent. Goalies, you just gotta love ‘em.

Also, there was a bit about Gilles Gratton in the book The Rebel League, and I posted pics of it over here. He was special even for a goalie. <3

Here’s Spencer Knight: every commercial break, [he] drinks, high-fives with the trainer. Then he goes to the same face-off dot. …that’s three, that’s four, cleaning the ice for some reason, while also skating in circles. He does five laps around the faceoff dot, and—"Hup, get out of my way!“—That’s Gustavsson trying to throw off the other goaltender.

“He’s just a focused guy who gives us a chance to win every night. Some nights it’s a different guy up front or on the back end (who steps up), but every night we have one goalie, and he’s picking up everybody and carrying us.” - Kris Letang
