Adri Schvaneveldt has always felt split between two worlds. In one world, they are the adopted child of a large and conservative Mormon family. In another, she is the CEO of a burgeoning fashion empire that pushes boundaries. But in order to be the latter, Adri first has to find the funding. After gaining a hefty following as a social media influencer/model, Adri has the potential customers– if they can get a reliable production model pounded out. And that means a bit of groveling at the feet of investors, most of who have never even heard the term “non-binary”.
But Adri lucks out with Gideon Snow, whose youth and open mind bring much needed funds to make Adri’s dream of diverse, accessible fashion a reality. Of course, lifting a newborn company to its feet is no small task, and late nights drive Adri to occasional stays at Gideon’s nearby house, where their relationship begins stretching beyond business. Adri knows they can’t put an entire business venture at risk for the turbulent whims of their heart. But reason doesn’t always win out.
Excerpt:
“Right, but if you do, I need you to listen to me when I say this.” Tiffany sat up in her chair and put her wine glass down. “Don’t fuck around with trans people unless you’re willing to claim them. If you’re more invested in appearing straight than you are in owning your relationship to someone you care about, then don’t fucking bother. From the bottom of my heart, I’m telling you. Straight men are more terrified of appearing gay than they are of hurting the trans women they’re with, and honestly, they don’t fucking deserve these women. Dating someone like Adri means that the whole world that’s catered to your every whim and need will suddenly hate you, and part of me gets why men don’t want to give up that privilege when they can just as well date someone cis. Maybe you aren’t gay, but you’re going to get treated that way. So, you know, think about that. If being perceived as straight matters more to you than Adri does, leave her alone and stick to cis women.” Tiffany’s eyes were dark and serious as they met Gideon’s. “Capisce?”
Gideon looked down into the depths of his blueberry wine. “Yeah. I get it.”
“Great. Lecture over.” Tiffany covered her mouth with a fist and burped. “You want dessert? I think we might have some ice cream in the fridge.”
“Sure, yeah.”
Tiffany leapt to her feet and strode into the house, leaving Gideon alone with the cool night and its whiffs of an ocean breeze.
