Ana Mendieta (1948-1985), Cuban American performance artist, sculptor, painter and video artist. She died on the 8th September 1985 in New York from a fall from her 34th floor apartment where she lived with her husband, minimalist sculptor Carl Andre. Just prior to her death, neighbours heard the couple arguing violently. Andre was tried and acquitted of her murder in the absence of conclusive evidence.
