GALTx eNews: GALT’s 2022 Help The Hounds Auction
Bidding is already open in GALT’s 2022 Help the Hounds Auction and runs through April 28, 2022, at 9:00 pm central time! Our wonderful volunteers, fosters, donors and auction bidders keep stepping up to the plate to help us meet the challenges that come our way. Recently, we incurred significant, unexpected medical expenses for our Injured Reserve (IR) hounds. This auction places the spotlight on three of these hounds: Poppy, Maggie, and Iris. Our fourth IR hound, Jill, is already the beneficiary of our Blazer’s Guardian Angels program.
Poppy, who arrived at GALT as an owner surrender, developed a host of medical issues. Earlier this year, she was diagnosed with an unidentified swelling on her left thorax that ruptured during an overnight vet stay, with the result of requiring several days of care at MedVet Dallas, an emergency clinic. Upon her discharge, she was diagnosed with a dislocated right hip. She had extensive surgery to put the hip back in place. Maggie has been receiving heartworm treatments for almost eight months and Iris will soon start her heartworm regimen. We just need to find a long term foster home for her first. In total, GALT has already spent over $30,000 on these three hounds and Iris’s treatments are expected to add another $2,000, for a grand total of about $32,000.
GALT is committed to covering all of the medical expenses for these three Injured Reserve hounds until they are healthy and ready for their loving, forever homes! With your continued help and generous bids, GALT can cover all of these medical costs. This auction includes an exciting and unique array of jewelry, art, gift card packages, and more! GALTx eNews: Say Farewell To 2021 With A Matched Donation!
Let’s send 2021 out with a bang by doubling your hound helping donations! Two families who recently adopted GALT Greyhounds have pledged $15,000 in matching funds for GALT’s 2021 Holiday Matching Fund to double your donations made between now and December 31st at midnight central time. Donating to this fund is a “greyt” way to optimize your year-end charitable giving. With the match, a $25 donation becomes $50 and a $100 donation becomes $200! What a terrific way to help the hounds! If we raise $15,000 in donations for GALT’s Holiday Matching Fund, we will meet the match raising a total of $30,000!
The past year has been quite challenging, to say the least. With your support, we effectively managed the second year of the pandemic, a devastating ice storm, and numerous unexpected capital expenditures. We have taken in a record number of hounds and provided them with extensive medical care and boarding. Our Adoption and Foster Coordinators, foster parents, volunteers and donors were critical to the success of our efforts. We truly appreciate the support you have all provided to help us continue our mission of “No Grey Turned Awaytm.”
Please find it in your heart to help the hounds one more time this year, with a donation to GALT’s 2021 Holiday Matching Fund. Give To The Greyhounds For Giving Tuesday!
We know we ask for your monetary support a lot, and we are asking again today, November 30th, 2021, for Giving Tuesday! Please give just a little more today so that you can be a part of our continuing success stories and know you made a difference with every adoption announcement!
Since inception in 2001, GALT has re-homed more than 3,800 hounds. Indeed, we are now the largest greyhound adoption organization in the United States with operations in Dallas,AustinandAlbuquerque. In recent years, we have welcomed an average of 178 hounds per year to our family. Just last week, our Dallas operations welcomed five girls from Greyhound farms and, in just one week in October, the Dallas team welcomed 19 new hounds to the GALT family. More will come, and we can’t wait to introduce you to them.
The expenses for so many hounds add up. Our annual operating costs currently exceed $693,000 and consist mostly of veterinary and boarding costs. The majority of hounds joining the GALT family require a spay or neuter, dental, vaccinations, micro-chipping and a thorough veterinary exam. These costs typically add up to at least $750 per hound. Some hounds also need treatment for tick borne diseases, heartworm or serious injuries such as a broken leg. The veterinary expenses incurred to prepare these hounds for forever homes can run into the thousands. But, we remain committed to our mantra of “no grey turned awaytm,” regardless of the circumstances or medical condition. Our sweet, young girl, Memory, is a great example. She has CUPS, which will require four pricey oral surgeries to remove her affected teeth.
