LEGACIES APPRECIATION WEEK, Day 4: Favorite Quotes

“What comes next is gonna be scary. And hard. The pain will probably never go away. You’re gonna miss her. It’s okay. It’s okay to miss her and feel sad. Because you’re also gonna feel something else. You’re gonna feel your sister beside you, no matter what, like she’s a part of you because she is. You will always feel her. She will never be fully gone. And that will make you brave.”

It was a Thursday morning when an expensive car drove past the welcome sign of the small town of Mystic Falls. The 1000 year old witch parked her car in front of the large house that was now her home. The teenage tribrid got out of the car and looked up at the  new house. She sighed softly and went back to the trunk, pulling out her bag. The moving truck would be there later with some of their other stuff.

Keelin got Nick out of the backseat as Freya went to open the front door. Hope headed inside and went upstairs to start looking for her room. She picked out a room and set her bag down before looking around and heading towards her window. She had a view of the woods, which was a good thing because it meant it would be easier to get out and shift if she needed to. She smiled a little, looking out at the woods. They were at a bit of distance from other houses, which allowed her to roam the woods without risking hurting anyone. She had a lot of control over her wolf form, but she still didn’t want to take a chance.

Finally, she came downstairs, her backpack on her back, ready for her first day.

“Hey, are you ready for your first day?’ Freya asked

"Not particularly, but let’s go. Gotta get it over at some time. It’s just another first day at another new school” Hope said, walking over to Nick and picking him up for a moment, smiling for a bit.  “I’ll be back soon” she promised her cousin with a smile, holding him for a bit before setting him down. She then headed out to the car

Freya got inside and drove Hope to her new school. The car pulled up at the front, and Hope let out a sigh, not thrilled about the fact she had to go to yet another school.

“Why are we here again?” she asked, looking at her aunt.

“This town has a lot of magical history. It could be useful for you and I both” Freya reminded her.

“Well why don’t we pick up the things you wanted to get and leave town again? Why go here?”

“Hope….”

“I know. I know. I’m sorry. I’ll see you later” Hope said, getting out of the car and looking around as she slowly entered the school

Landon Kirby stood by the entrance doors of Mystic Falls High School, leaning against the wall. Every time the doors opened he looked for someone who didn’t belong so he could know who the new student was. He didn’t know anything about her other than her name. Hope. When the doors swung open for the fifth time that morning, he looked up bored, thinking it was just another regular student. Again. But his eyes soon widened when he saw the beautiful girl who walked in.

“Hi um. You must be Hope, right?” He asked with a small smile, though he frankly didn’t feel he needed to. He knew it was her.

Hope looked towards the voice and gave him a small smile, though she wasn’t here to make friends. “Yes, I am” she said, looking at him, liking the shade of his eyes instantly

Landon’s smile widened a little when he heard her speak. “I’m Landon. I’m your tour guide.” He introduced himself politely.

“Its nice to meet you” Hope said, looking at him. She had done this more times than she would prefer. She probably wouldn’t be here very long and thus shouldn’t get too comfortable. “lets get started then.”

On yet another school tour. He wasnt the stereotypical hot guy. The jock most girls felt drawn to. He had messy curls and cheap clothes. But part of Hope felt drawn to him, a desire to talk to him more. Yet it was probably for the best if she didn’t. The last friend she made… well that wasn’t a story she wanted to repeat.

“It’s nice to meet you too.” Landon said honestly and nodded at her following words, beginning to walk a little further down the school hallway. “Well these are the lockers…obviously.” He mumbled shaking his head to himself.

He had never been this nervous around a girl before. But he could hardly help himself when it came to her. Not only was she extremely beautiful, but she also had a kind soft energy about her. He never felt so drawn to anyone. Well, never felt drawn to anyone at all. Hope was the first person to provoke this reaction out of him.

“And through here we have some classrooms. Do you have your schedule yet?”

“Oh, um” Hope pulled her schedule out of her pocket and held it out to him. “Here” she said so he could show her the way even though she was perfectly capable of finding her own way around the place.

It would speed up the job, and it was better than pushing away the tour even if it was better she was alone. It was just a tour. And it would please her Aunts if she just did what she was supposed to.

Landon gently took the schedule from her and looked it over, hoping to see if they shared any classes. He smiled when he saw they had history and English together. “Well your first class is math with Ms. Davis. Just don’t let her catch you on your phone or you’ll never hear the end of it. Trust me.” He chuckled a little, heading in the direction of the math classroom. “And this is it right here. Standard math classroom.” He said stepping inside a little considering it was empty right now.

“I’ll keep that in mind” Hope said with a small chuckle as she looked in the room. “So have you lived in this town all of your life?” She wasnt sure why she was asking. Avoiding small talk or any talk helped avoid connections. Which was exactly what she needed. But part of her was…. curious

Landon nodded, turning his attention back to her. He couldn’t seem to look away from her even if he wanted to. “I have. It’s nice, though it is a very small town. What about you? Where are you from?” He asked with a small smile.

“Originally? New Orleans. Though I move around a bit with my aunts sometimes’ Hope said, looking at him. She didn’t particularly like constantly moving. But it was better if people didn’t know where she was. Granted going to Mystic Falls of all places probably wasn’t the best idea

"New Orleans, really?” Landon smiled. “I’ve never been. But I’ve heard great things about it. I’ve always wanted to see it.” He said honestly. “Do you like moving? Some people hate it, and others don’t.” He said and glanced at her schedule to see what class she had next. He gestured for her to follow him and headed in the direction of the English classroom.

Hope shook her head. “I don’t, but I’m used to it. It’s probably only a matter of time before I leave here too” she said with a small sigh “Though, who knows, maybe I’ll stick around for a while. And yeah New Orleans is pretty great” she confirmed with a sad smile as she thought of home

Landon instantly saddened at the thought of Hope leaving. He couldn’t just not see her again. He couldn’t even imagine that despite only being around her for about five minutes. But she was the first girl he was actually interested in, even if he knew there was no chance she felt the same way. Just being around her made him feel better.

“I hope you do. Stick around I mean.” He said with a sheepish smile, stopping in front of another classroom a bit further down the hall. “Anyway um. This is your second period class. English. We actually have this class at the same time.”

“Well, then I guess I will be seeing you around” Hope said, looking at him before looking around at the classrom

“You will.” Landon confirmed. “I saw we also have history together.” He smiled. “And there’s also lunch of course.” He couldn’t help it. He wanted to spend time with her. To know her. “So uh. I noticed you signed up for an art elective. Is that something you like to do? Paint or draw?”

Hope glanced over at him and then away, not wanting to get attached to anyone. “Yes it is. I’ve liked to do it since I was a young child” It was a passion that laid deep within her heart. A passion she shared with her father. The tribrid’s heart ached as she thought about her father

Landon smiled, keeping his gaze on her. She was so interesting. Everything about her was exciting and he knew he wanted to know more. “That’s really cool. I actually can’t draw to save my life. Stick figures are about my limit.” He chuckled a little. “Who knows? Maybe this year I’ll try something new and sign up for art class.”

“Maybe you could” Hope said, looking at him before looking away. “My aunts and uncles can’t really draw either” She wasn’t impressed with his obvious eagerness to get closer, but she also knew that was because she was trying to avoid getting close to people. She continued walking with him towards his next class. She didn’t add anything else to the conversation as she stared ahead

“What about your parents?” Landon asked curiously as he walked with her. He could tell she wasn’t really making an effort to talk to him, which only strengthened his belief that he really had no chance with a girl as beautiful as she was. Maybe he could at least aim for friendship.

Hope’s face faltered before it hardened a bit. “They’re dead. They died two years ago” She looked over at Landon, unable to help the way her expression softened at the sight of him, surprised by it. “Ever since then, I just lived with my aunts.”

“Oh.” Landon said softly, his eyes showing how sorry he was though he didn’t say the words out loud. “I um. I never knew my parents. I was raised in multiple foster homes.” He said with a light shrug, wanting to help take the focus off her parents.

Hope was grateful at that shift of conversation, and she nodded a bit. “Well, if you’ve lived here your whole life, im sure you know the best place to eat? I doubt we will be cooking tonight”

Landon smiled. “I actually do. The Mystic Grill. I also happen to work there after school so, I might see you around.” He said, clearly happy for that possibility.

“You probably will” Hope said, noticing how pleased that made him. It was obvious how interested in her he was. And she wasnt sure what to do with that. She was drawn to him, she couldn’t help but admit that. But he was human. And she would eventually leave. And people that got close to her got hurt. Even killed. Her parents did.

Connor walked over to Landon and Hope. “Kirby, I’m sure this girl has much more interesting things to do than follow you on a tour.”

“Is this loser bothering you?” Dana asked, walking up closer to Hope. “I wouldnt mind giving you a much better tour involving much more interesting people.”

Landon’s smile widened a little at that, now very much looking forward to his shift at The Grill later if it meant he got to see her again. He opened his mouth to speak but immediately closed it when he heard Connor

. He tensed a little at his presence. “Well, they appointed me as her tour guide.” He said, making sure to keep any rudeness out of his voice.

“I’m fine here” Hope said, narrowing her eyes a little, not liking how they were treating him but not commenting on it yet. “He is giving me a good tour of the place.”

“Well, if you come to your senses about this guy, let me know” Dana said.

“We could make it worth your while” Connor said, glancing down at Hope’s lips and back up at her before walking away with Dana

Landon blinked in surprise at Hope’s defense towards him. He didn’t think she would just jump at the opportunity to be with the popular kids, but she also hadn’t seemed that interesting in completing the tour.

“You didn’t have to defend me. I mean…you could’ve gone with them. If that’s what you wanted.” He mumbled once Connor and Dana were gone.

Hope raised an eyebrow. “Go with two people that give off rich, popular asshole vibe? I’ll pass, thanks” she said.

Landon chuckled a little. “Yeah well. You’re not wrong exactly. Just don’t let them hear you say that. Trust me.” He said giving her a small smile. “Anyway uh. I’ll just show you to your locker and then walk you to your first class. If…you don’t remember the way and if you want me to.”

“I’d appreciate that” Hope said, looking at him curiously, not saying anything else. He seemed… different than the other people she had met but Hope couldn’t explain why

Landon’s smile widened, glad he was getting to spend more time with her. He knew eventually she’d probably find new people to hang out with. A girl like her couldn’t possibly stay friendless for long. But he was determined to appreciate his time with her while he had it. “Here you are.” He said stopping in front of her locker.

Hope opened up the locker and looked at it before closing it. She doubted she would use it like the other students did. She had werewolf strength after all. Thanks to a certain… incident. She sighed softly at the thought and pushed it away before looking at Landon. “Lead the way” she told him and paused. “Thank you for showing me around”

“You’re welcome.” Landon said softly as he began heading towards the math classroom, remembering that was her first class. He was only sorry he couldn’t stay. “I liked showing you around and talking to you.” He admitted with a small smile.

Hope could tell. She gave him a small smile. “I guess I’ll see you in… English” she said as they reached the classroom. “Second period.”

“Yeah. You will.” Landon confirmed, happy they at least had two classes together. “And then later in history, after lunch. I’ll uh, be here to show you to English classroom after first period.” He promised, not wanting her to get lost despite the fact that the school wasn’t exactly huge and the classrooms weren’t that far away from each other.

“Alright. I’ll see you then” Hope said before heading into her class. and pulling out her notebook. She personally felt like this was a waste of time. She was a tribrid. She wasnt going to be some engineer or something

Landon smiled, watching her for a moment before slowly heading in the direction of his own class. He knew nothing could make this day a bad one. Not even Connor and his stupid crew.

It was now lunch time, and Hope got food from the cafeteria before making her way over to an area away from others before taking a seat. It was better this way

Landon carried his tray of food, looking for a place to sit. The cafeteria was always a minefield. His mood brightened significantly however when he saw Hope sitting by herself. It surprised him that no one asked her to sit with them, but it also meant he could sit with her without getting any crap for it.

“Hey.” He smiled taking a seat across from her.

Hope looked up, surprised by his voice. “Hey” she greeted, looking at him. She glanced around briefly to make sure more weren’t coming before returning her gaze to him. Her tour guide. Landon Kirby, she discovered during English class’ role call

“Why are you sitting here alone?” Landon asked curiously. “I mean. No offense. I just thought…well someone like you can’t possibly stay without lunch invitations or a group of people wanting to follow you and join every club.” He said with a smile.

Hope shrugged a little. “I dont want a group of friends or to join clubs. I’m not really a… people person” she told him. “Another reason to avoid those two from this morning besides just them bing rich and popular assholes” She chuckled softly

Landon chuckled softly. “Oh. I guess it’s a little surprising but, it’s interesting. I’m not really a people person either. Not that anyone here wants to be my friend even if I was but…I suppose life just works out considering I’m not.”

“I don’t see why anyone wouldn’t want to be your friend. You’re a nice guy” Hope said, looking at him, “Though I’m not exactly the person people should be friends with. It’s better if I keep my distance”

Landon smiled a little at the compliment. “Thanks. But, I don’t know. The students here don’t really care about nice. I’m just the foster kid. This town tends to run on tradition and important family names. I have neither of those things. Plus like I said, I’m kind of a loner.” He said with a light shrug. “Why do you say that though? You seem like a nice girl too. And hey anyone who can stand up to Conner and Dana can’t possibly be too bad.” He smiled.

“I can’t really relate, but, uh” Hope hesitated for a long moment. “My mom was a foster kid too so she would have been able to” She looked down a little at the thought of her mother.

Landon’s eyes softened at her words, easily being able to see the pain she held in her heart. She was so kind. She didn’t deserve to be so alone. “What happened? I mean, you don’t have to tell me. We don’t even have to talk about it. I just thought- I don’t know. That maybe you’d want to. Since you mentioned not really having friends.”

Hope waited for a long moment before saying “Not yet. But thank you. So what do you usually like to do?” She asked, unable to explain to him how she kidnapped her mother and put her under a sleeping spell and trusted the wrong person whose mother got Hope’s mother killed

Landon nodded, instantly understanding. He wouldn’t want to talk about his parents deaths either if he had parents and lost them. “You’re welcome.” He gave her a small smile. “Oh um. Well I don’t really have a lot of hobbies but, I do like music.”

“You do?” Hope questioned. “What kind of music? Or are you an overall fan?”

Landon nodded at her question. “I tend to like most kinds of music.” He smiled a little. “I also write songs. I mean not very well but, it’s just something I’ve always done in my spare time.”

“So I make art and you write songs. What a pair” she said without thinking and fell silent, cursing her desire to talk to him

Landon’s eyes widened a little and a very light blush formed on his cheeks at the idea of them actually becoming a couple. “You could design my album covers.” He joked in attempt to lighten the mood.

Hope chuckled lightly and smiled at him. “Yeah maybe” She fell quiet and started to eat. “So, uh, what time is your shift?” she asked after a few moments.

Landon smiled. “4:30. Why? Did you decide to eat there with your aunts?” He asked, hoping this meant he would see her after school.

“Well I can ask. I dont know for sure if Freya and Keelin want to go out tonight” Hope said with a light shrug.

“I hope so. I think you’re interesting. And, that it’d be nice to hang out after school. If you want to.”

Hope’s face faltered slightly at his words, and her eyes saddened. She couldn’t afford him dying too. It was better if she didn’t. “I, uh. I dont think I can today. I still haven’t even unpacked,” she said honestly

“Oh.” Landon’s smile faded slowly at the obvious hesitation she showed. He knew she was most likely being honest about not having unpacked, but that didn’t make it any less of an excuse. “It’s okay. I mean. Duty calls and all that. Maybe next time.”

“Maybe” Hope said, feeling guilty as she saw his smile fade, but she reminded herself that it was for the best. “And if I can’t go to the Grill tonight, I’m sure I’ll end up there some other night”

Landon smiled a little at that, knowing it was true. It wasn’t like there were many restaurant options in Mystic Falls. It didn’t mean she wanted to spend time with him. But at least it meant he’d get to see her once in a while.

“I’m sure you will. They do have really great milkshakes.”

“I’ll definitely keep that in mind” Hope said, smiling a bit. “I like milkshakes”

“Me too.” Landon said, now feeling a bit better when he saw her smile. “What’s your favorite?”

“Peanut Butter Blast. Whipped Cream on the Bottom” Hope said, looking at him, curious as to what his reaction would be. Nobody ever said whipped cream on the bottom

Landon smiled curiously. “Really?” He chuckled softly. “Sorry, I’ve never heard that one before but that’s good. I’ll never forget it now. Peanut butter blast with whipped cream on the bottom.” He smiled.

“Really. And if I can get it there, you’ll probably see me get it often”

“You can.” Landon assured her. Now he had hope he would see her a lot. Even if it never amounted to anything, he just liked being around her. “So, besides art, what else are you interested in?”

Hope shrugged. It wasn’t like she could answer magic and fighting. “I dont know. I read sometimes. And watch Cutthroat Kitchen”

Landon chuckled a little at the mention of Cutthroat Kitchen. “Really? You know somehow that doesn’t actually surprise me. I don’t make a habit of reading but, I do it once in a while if I’m interested in the topic. What about cooking? You like watching cooking shows, so can you cook?”

“Somewhat.” Hope shrugged lightly. “Im no professional or anything. But I can do a bit”

“Yeah, same here.” Landon said with a small smile. “I can cook basic things. My best meal is pancakes.” He chuckled softly.

Hope chuckled. “Well pancakes are good” she said, giving him a small smile before it faded. She needed to push him away. But she didn’t want to. Fortunately, she didn’t have to.

The bell then rang to go to class. Hope stood up, grabbing her bag with ease and swiftly taking care of her tray, relieved to have an excuse to get up since for some ridiculous reason she couldn’t do it herself. She had done this how many times already? She couldn’t afford to get close to him. All it would do is get him killed too. Especially if one of her dad’s old enemies came around.

She couldn’t afford to get close to him. All it would do is get him killed too. Especially if one of her dad’s old enemies came around. Making a wanted connection wasn’t worth it if it meant he died because of her. Just like her parents and Uncle Elijah did. She couldn’t stand being responsible for his death as well. It was better for everyone to be as far as they could from Hope Andrea Mikaelson.
