Sanctuary Episode 3, Ch. 2

Merlin scanned the village, making sure everyone was on the move and no one was being overlooked. Elyan and Gwaine were helping to load supplies into wagons, and Percival was scooping up young children to place them securely in the wagon beds as well. An elderly woman came hobbling out of her home, and Merlin rushed over to give her a hand. He helped her over to one of the carts and then gave her a lift up into it. When they’d first arrived to evacuate the village, it had only been as a precaution, but the wind had changed, and the influx of smoke heralded that the wildfire was now heading toward them.

“What if Gwen’s device didn’t work?” Elyan asked worriedly, coming up alongside Merlin.

“The fire could have gone around,” he replied. “But even if it failed, she and Lancelot would know to rendezvous with us here.”

No sooner had he said that, a spectral hummingbird came flitting into the space in front of him and began to write out illuminated letters in the air.

Help, trapped, fire closing in.

The bird finished its message with a glowing flourish of Lancelot’s identifying rune. Merlin’s heart dropped into his stomach, and Elyan’s expression looked equally fraught.

Sleep Tight Don’t Let the Nightmares Bite Ch. 4

Merlin rounded the corner and pulled up short. There it was. “Fan out,” he instructed.

The knights spread out along the sides, their gazes sweeping wildly back and forth since they couldn’t see the creature. But Merlin could see it, backing up into an alcove. They had it cornered. It snapped its eyes to Merlin and spat viciously. Merlin leaped forward with Excalibur to stab it. It tried to dart away, and so the blade only skimmed the back of its flank, but the sword did manage to cut it.

The mara screeched in shock and rage and skittered around. It probably didn’t know the knights couldn’t see it. Merlin circled around to come at it again.

The creature whipped its head back and forth, but it had nowhere to go. Until it turned and leaped straight at Lancelot. But it didn’t crash against him; it went into him and vanished. Lancelot jerked and his eyes immediately rolled back as he collapsed to the floor.
