Ghost Train

I was hurrying home late one night, taking my usual route across an old set of train tracks. The tracks were typically used for freight trains, and not for passenger trains. At least this was the case for the 5 years that I have lived in this city. This context seems of little importance, and you very well may be correct in thinking so, but on this night, at that moment, it was the only fact I felt mattered.

As I crossed over the tracks that night, I heard the faint but distinctive chattering of people. Once I had crossed the tracks however, the chatted ceased. My first instinct was to search around me to see if there were others near me. There was nobody. An empty street, an empty set of tracks, and an empty feeling that engulfed me. I sped up my pace, determined that it was just an auditory hiccup of sorts.

I cast concern from my mind, determined whether I misheard, or simply didn’t notice another possible source for the noise, that it was nothing important to me. Now I find myself wondering about the whimsical chatter heard for that brief moment in time. Could it be possible that a train, one which I could not see, passed through where I walked? I pose this question in anticipation, for I stand before the tracks again tonight and I worry about what crossing may bring.
