All nineteen known moons in the Solar System that are large enough to be round are tidally locked with their primaries, because they orbit very closely and tidal force increases rapidly (as a cubic function) with decreasing distance.[14] On the other hand, the irregular outer satellites of the gas giants(e.g.Phoebe), which orbit much farther away than the large well-known moons, are not tidally locked.
However for the purposes of the thought experiment, anything’s possible.
Are all of these in 1:1 locks though? You can also have 1:2 and 2:3 resonances. I think Jupiter has something in a 1:2:3:4 resonance.
The orbital periods of three large moons are in a 1:2:4 resonance, which is probably what you’re thinking of. But the rotational periods of those moons are equal to their orbital periods so they always keep one face toward Jupiter.
It’s surprising that no moons are in a 3:2 rotation lock like Mercury. Our moon is probably far enough away to be feasible for some other ratio to be stable. But it used to be a lot closer, with much stronger tidal forces, and it got stuck in the 1:1 ratio. It’s been that way ever since.
Anybody know how to get rid of a shed?
I got this… not falling down but not particularly well-constructed shed in the yard the former owner used to smoke cigars in and it’s RIGHT in the middle of the best gardening area in the whole yard. Like I’m pretty sure I could take this thing apart with a crowbar if necessary but that’s a lot of damn work, and it’s not quite well-built enough/modular so I’m not sure I can ask/sell it to someone else to take away.
So, do I put it up on nextdoor and see if anyone wants it (free if you take it/I’ll pay you $100 to remove it)? Try taking it apart and if so, where does the resulting detritus go? Straight to the city dump?
Hell, if you’re in the denver metro area or willing to drive there DM me I want it gone so I can start doing soil prep.
I did this recently. The “demolition” only took an afternoon (not really demolition when it’s so old it’ll fall over if you lean on it). You pay a company to drop an empty dumpster at your house and take it away full. The keyword is “construction debris disposal”. I live in a jurisdiction where it’s forbidden to dump construction debris in the normal waste stream, so there are plenty of folks offering this service. Also it’s a lot easier to break a shed into dumpster-size pieces than trashcan-size pieces.
The soil underneath was great despite being covered for god knows how long.
Always wear gloves. Splinters, broken glass, rusty nails.
Remove any glass panels first, and carefully. If you just let them smash, you’ll be pulling glass out of your yard forever, like me.
