Not to be that person but in one campaign I did accidentally kill the magic shop owner.

I was a changeling and the magic shop owner had a massive portrait of him and his wife hanging on the wall. I decided to take on his wife’s form to try to steal one of his more valuable magic items. I came in when the story was empty, so right before closing, and acted my heart out trying to sell that I was the man’s wife. The DM makes me do a performance check and I get a nat 20.

Awesome, right?

Well, what I hadn’t known was that the shop keeper’s wife was dead. I preformed so well that he thought she was back from the grave. What I also didn’t know until I went digging was that that the shop keeper was the one who killed his wife. It was supposed to be a whole thing we were supposed to discover but I ended up acting so well that I gave him a heart attack and he died.

I ended up taking his form, closing up shop, and digging through all of his stuff. I left the shop with every magic item the shop keeper had, all of his documentation, and the shop keeper’s body shoved into a bag of holding. I basically left a note saying he was going take his wares on the road, as he couldn’t stand to lay in the same bed he once shared with his beloved wife.

Interesting fact about that changeling character was that sometimes when she killed people she made them into a new identity. So I did in fact go into full on traveling merchant mode every so often and used his vendor’s license to get out of trouble a few times.
