The tragedy of Penny Dreadful’s ending is that it validated that Vanessa was doomed from the very beginning. In the end, her only choices were either to suppress her darkness and suffer, or to embrace her darkness and perish. And thus, she was put down like a sickly contagious animal because her own existence was painful to herself and a danger to everyone else.
