This painting—a copy of George P.A. Healy’s 1868 The Peacemakers—though not (at first glance) terribly climactic, depicts an important moment in the American Civil War.
Four leaders of the Union army meet on the River Queen, planning their strategy for the end of the war.
As the White House Historical Association writes, Healy presages the result with the rainbow behind President Abraham Lincoln, “emblematic of the approaching peace.”
Though the moment is a quiet one, Healy researched it thoroughly, interviewing several of the men depicted and having all but Lincoln sit personally for the image.
