I was thinking about the need for more “marriage of convenience” sambucky stories, and this happened.

  • Meet Sam, the dazzling young crown prince of a faraway nation. And despite being adored by the general public, the fact that he still hasn’t married and “settled down” has been a point of contention lately, especially now that his father is on his deathbed. Worried that his father might pass him and offer the throne to his younger brother (who’s already married with 2 kids,) Sam sets out to find himself a partner, a task that’s quickly proven to be harder than expected, even with dozens of people literally lining up to win the young prince’s favor.
  • Enter Bucky, a player with a reputation and killer charm, who meets Sam one night when Sam’s in town wearing his usual disguise. So Bucky doesn’t clock him right away, instead all he sees is a good looking guy and he offers to buy him a drink.
  • Against his better judgment, Sam accepts. They get to talking, and something about Bucky draws Sam in, and in a moment of rash thinking (and one could argue no thinking at all,) he reveals his true identity and offers him a deal:
  • Bucky has to pretend to be Sam’s husband in return for a place to live and a life of royalty he never could’ve dreamt of. Sam also assures Bucky that he’s free to keep seeing whoever he wanted, as long as he’s discreet about it.
  • Bucky, being the adventurous soul that he is, says yes in a heartbeat. (and maybe, just maybe, he’s intrigued by this man, and wants to know him better and to spend more time with him.)
  • So they get married, and things are going well. The public buys it, and sooner or later Sam is going to be king.
  • They sleep in separate rooms (obviously) and with Sam’s busy schedule, barely see one another except for celebrations and ceremonies in which Bucky has to make an appearance.
  • But as time passes, they start to see more of each other. Bucky wakes up one day to find Sam already up and having breakfast, so he joins him, and they talk a little over breakfast. They get to know more about each other, Bucky tells Sam more about himself, the accident that cost him his family and his arm, and Sam listens. Sam tells him about his own life, the untold truth of his job, and Bucky just… listens. He doesn’t try to offer solutions, he doesn’t judge, he just listens.
  • Something shifts in their dynamic after that day and they start spending more time with each other. Bucky “accidently” wakes up in time to catch Sam before he leaves for the day, and stays up late at night until Sam’s home. Sam suddenly doesn’t find royal celebration a waste of valuable time he could use working, and actually looks forward to them these days (the fact that Bucky’s by his side the entire time, holding his hand and beaming at him definitely doesn’t have anything to do with that, right?)
  • Sam comes home after the end of a long tiring day to find Bucky waiting for him as usual on the couch. He joins him, and starts unwinding. and as he tells Bucky about the latest disaster his father’s senior advisor Walker has caused, Bucky listens attentively, maybe even offers a massage, onlybecause his hands are magic and Sam looks tired.
  • And as they grow closer, Bucky reminds him that none of it is real. He’s just there until Sam finds the real thing. and when he meets Sam’s childhood friend and right hand man Steve Rogers, he thinks Sam already has. So he slowly retreats, gives them time alone whenever Steve is there to visit, thinking there’s a romance blossoming between the two (there isn’t) and he doesn’t want to get in the way.
  • Sam too finds it hard to remember that everything is fake, that there isn’t something growing between them with each heated touch and lingering look shared even in private. And when he comes home to his “husband” to find him waiting for him over a candlelit dinner, it’s easy to get swept away in the fantasy.
  • Until one day Sam (somehow) discovers that Bucky hasn’t been with anyone since they “got married” so he asks him, “Why?”
  • Bucky looks away, “I didn’t want anyone to think we’re faking it, or whatever,” he mumbles. and Sam feeling brave after the wine they shared over dinner presses on, “Is that all?” he asks, his heart beating wildly, fighting to leap out of his chest. After a moment or so, Bucky looks him in the eye, a heated look and a different millone emotions plastered across his face. “no,” he breathes.
  • Is it Bucky who leans forward? Is it Sam? who knows, what matters is that they finally do.

Just throw in some more drama, maybe even political trouble (an attempted coup by Senior advisor and Certified Trash Walker!? Sam’s taken and Bucky’s dark past comes to light as he goes absolutely feral looking for him “Where’s my husband?” he roars through gritted teeth) and obviously some “the situation calls for it” PDA, a ballroom dancing scene with snarky comments traded back and forth between the two (this one’s important) and you got yourself a story I’d kill to read.
