DESCRIPTION: There are two distinct sides to publishing any book: writing it and selling it. The Anatomy of Publishing Retreat focuses equally on both aspects. As you will see in the preliminary schedule below, attendees spend one day learning the primary tenants from The Anatomy of Story by John Truby and another learning marketing tips and tools that will advance their books in the marketplace.

Part One: The Anatomy of Story by John Truby is a screenwriter’s book hailed by seasoned authors as “The best craft book I’ve ever read.” Truby not only masterfully explains the core tenants of storytelling, he helps writers understand the scaffolding and architecture of story without taking away the personal touches of decorating and design. During this four-day weekend, participants will receive a copy of The Anatomy of Story and a crash course in four core chapters: seven steps, character, story world, and plot.

Part Two: Every book needs its own marketing strategy. That is a fact. A more difficult fact is authors are (usually) in charge of that strategy themselves. This day will center on out-of-the-box thinking, roundtable discussions, as well as individual consultations. Each participant will leave the retreat with an individualized marketing strategy.

LOCATION: Camdenton, Missouri in a gorgeous lake house (click for photos!).
The house has 7 bedrooms & 6 bathrooms, and with accessible spaces available. The nearest airport is in Springfield, MO. We will coordinate a group shuttle if we have enough people flying in to that airport.
