Stellar Stripes from American Style and Spirit

This evening gown was worn by a member of a Wisconsin family whose centuries of wardrobes are now on display at the Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan. The exhibit, American Style and Spirit, is running now through April 2 of this year and it offers everything from corseted 19th Century gowns to 1980s dresses. In between are some remarkable beauties that I will be featuring in the future. Today, I offer this silk taffeta gown, an exact reproduction created by Edward Maeder of a favorite evening gown worn by a college student in the 1930s but now too fragile to display. Notice all the ways stripes are used: from the standing pleats at the top of the front bodice, to the pleated sleeves caught with a bias trim at the edge, to the gathered back flounce that makes dancing all the more graceful. Ribbons bows trim front and back. No wonder it was her favorite. I want it myself.

I will be reviewing the book that accompanies the exhibit next week.
