Mostly wanted to write this because of Ten bashing based on his personality and actions without trying to understand the underlying reasons. Not that I’m a Ten apologist since I know he has his flaws and I want him to grow from it. I just hope for more understanding why he’s like this.

Let’s face it: Chronic illness affects everyone in the family, not just the individual. It’s likely his status as a person with a chronically ill sibling had affected him and shaped his personality. In fact if you do some research, he matches such a profile, which means kudos to i7 staff for a well written character.

There is the fact that their parents paid more attention to Riku despite them trying to treat the twins equally, because Riku needed it due to his medical condition. Even if Ten was resilient, there would have been some resentment at least. 

Also, Ten left in order to get money for the Nanases since their family business did fail so they were not doing well financially. That would have affected Riku’s access to healthcare. It’s complicated, really. Maybe, if Riku didn’t have to go for hospital visits, Ten might not even need to leave… who knows…

Traits of Ten that matches profile of person with chronically ill sibling:

Positive:

• Maturity and taking responsibilities: Very capable as seen in the story.
• Independent: Left the family and even studied overseas alone.
• Compassionate: Really gentle with children when he sees them as seen in TRG novel (iirc)
• Supportive and protective: with TRG and Aya. And Riku, but Ten shows it behind the scenes and not in front of Riku why this
• Pride in own and sibling’s accomplishment: From end of part 1 onwards.

Negative:

• Pressure to achieve: he’s pushing himself a lot. There was that time he collapsed, but we still don’t know why. Exhaustion, perhaps. 
• Negative feelings:
  -From the various incidents mentioned in rabbit chats, the stress that Ten experiences over Riku is high.
  -Even when estranged, he’s still constantly worried over Riku as seen by how Ten keeps asking about Riku in the rabbit chats.
  -Fear and vulnerability: see above
  -Sadness: there’s this sense of sadness around him yep.
• Issues in internalising and externalising: Ten keeps hiding things from others. Like wearing sunglasses or mask when he’s about to show some emotion, so others won’t see his face. Probably a habit to not express himself, so as to not let others worry about him.
