Toronto-based artist Vivek Shraya found photos of her mom in the 1970s and recreated them last year while transitioning, creating a piece that sheds shame—of immigrant parents, of gender identity—for love and appreciation. “This project felt like a way to honour my mother, but also, the daughter she never wanted, or rather, the daughter she wasn’t allowed to want.”
