“Growth and Comfort Never Co-exist”

Growing up with a single mother and three siblings, Ginni Rometty, Chairman, President and CEO of IBM, learned the importance of a good work ethic at an early age. Ginni took these lessons to heart, from school to the workplace. “We learned you never let someone define who you are,” Ginni says. “Only you define who you are.” She earned a degree in engineering from Northwestern University (where she was also the valedictorian of her graduating class) and, in 2011, became the first female CEO of IBM. Today, Ginni defines what it means to be a strong, positive role model for women everywhere.

It’s my favorite day of the year: International Day of the Girl.

I love this day because it’s a chance to celebrate the remarkable girls in the world who are making a difference, who have made great achievements and have overcome incredible odds just to get where they are today.

To mark the day, we’ve compiled some of our favorite profiles of girls and women from NPR’s archives, from Boko Haram survivors on their first visit to New York City to a Pakistani squash champ who dressed as a boy just so she could play sports.

I hope they inspire you as much as they inspire me.

Abducted By Boko Haram, Now Posing With Lady Liberty In Times Square

Hauwa and Ya Kaka aren’t typical teens. This month they came to the U.S. to speak up for the thousands of abductees still being held. But they also made time for tourist fun.

The Taliban Couldn’t Quash This Pakistani Squash Champ

For much of her life, Maria Toorpakai has been threatened by extremist groups like the Taliban. Now the subject of a PBS documentary, she tells how she found the courage to keep playing sports.

She Was Too Poor To Stay In School. Now She’s An Inspiration To Rihanna

Angeline Murimirwa is lauded as one of the world’s most influential women for her work with a charity that gives scholarships to poor girls in Africa. She herself was once one of those girls.

From Poverty To Rocket Scientist To CEO, A Girl Scout’s Inspiring Story

When she was a Brownie, Sylvia Acevedo was inspired to earn her science badge. In her new memoir, the Girl Scouts CEO says this experience led directly to her career at NASA.

The Dreams Of Today’s Teen Girl Activists

The young leaders of Girl Up were in Washington, D.C., this summer to network and lobby Congress on gender issues. We asked them about their role models, what they’d like to change and why it’s important for boys to join the movement.

And as a drummer myself, I couldn’t help but share this one! -MG

Yoyoka Soma played the song for the Hit Like A Girl Drumming contest. She didn’t take home the gold, but she’s clearly winning at life.

In Honour if #InternationalDayOfTheGirl: What does #BlackGirlMagic mean to me? My hair defies gravity…I’d say that’s pretty magical wouldn’t you? This is one of the many reasons we refer to our curls, coils and kinks as our crowns. The Greeks had olive branches, the British had gold and gem stones …. Us? we were born this way! As If our DNA refused to be anything but royal… we are beautiful, powerful and exceptionally made! ✊✨ - Photographer : @yungvsco ••• #blackhistory #happyblackhistorymonth #blackgirlmagic #jadejanelle #curlygirls #naturalhair #naturallycurly #internationaldayofthegirl #dayofthegirl

#DovePartner I was looking through some old photos and immediately texted my best friend, “I will never forgive myself for not comprehending how cute I was!” That’s hyperbole. I forgive myself. Haha!⁣

Today is #InternationalDayoftheGirl and I’m proud to celebrate with @Dove and @BGCA_Clubs to empower and help girls overcome today’s obstacles. An estimated 45% of Generation Z say they feel anxious about their appearance. Low body confidence and anxiety over appearance are stopping young people from being their best selves, it is affecting their mental health, physical health, friendships, and even performance at school.⁣

Childhood trauma, mental illness, media representation, and other systemic oppression really fueled my self-hatred. If I could give my younger self one piece of advice, I don’t think I would’ve been ready to hear it, but here it is anyway…⁣

“You may feel like you need to work incredibly hard and constantly be on your toes to fit in and feel beautiful. You may feel like your lack of beauty and your awkwardness make you a burden to others; all this effort and strain is what you owe to others for the space you take up by existing. But you don’t owe anyone anything. Please take a deep breath, shake those shoulders out, shake your face, and relax it, massage your jaw. You can love yourself as you are right at this moment, take your time, discover all that you are, and then give yourself the love you deserve.”⁣

As part of their long term partnership, @Dove and The Boys & Girls Clubs of America are teaming up to empower girls for International Day of the Girl! @BGCA_Clubs provides girls in need with life-changing mentors and programs to ensure great futures are still possible. 88% of club girls feel they can stand up for what’s right, even when their friends disagree. You can give more girls a great future by donating to @BGCA_Clubs through October 14. Dove has committed $250,000 to increase your impact! Check out the donation link in my stories! #GreatFuturesForHer #DoveSelfEsteemProject ⁣
