This is my first coding assignment for my software engineering class that started today. It’s going to be a really good semester.

UPDATE: I got my grade back and

“100″

Since this post has gotten some attention, I feel like it’s worth mentioning that this was just the first half of the assignment.

The second half, which we weren’t made aware of until the day we were meant to turn this one in, was to trade USB drives with the person sitting next to us and MODIFY their “unreadable” code without getting any help from them.

This was to teach us two things:

1) In this field, you’ll spend more time working with code written by other people than you will writing original code from a blank slate. The people who wrote the original code will probably not be around to help you. Learning to read code is IMPORTANT, even if it seems unreadable.

2) There is a strong brotherhood/sisterhood among programmers and software engineers. Respect that bond when you’re writing code and documentation. In my professor’s words: “When you write code, pretend that the person who will have to maintain it after you’re gone is a homicidal maniac who knows where you live.”

This class and professor are incredible.

Tiktoker: How has the CW not made any money since 2006?

Adam Conover: Okay, this is gonna be super fun to explain. It’s likely because of something called “Hollywood Accounting”. See, the CW network doesn’t actually make the shows it airs. Instead, they’re made by a studio that’s part of the same parent company, and the CW network pays that studio to air the shows. In that way, they’re able to show a loss even though the entire company is making money off of all those sweet superheroes in love.

Now why would they go to all that trouble? Huh. You think it could be because it allows them to reduce the amount they pay in taxes, royalties, and other profit-sharing agreements? Actors, writers, directors, and producers are often entitled to a backend - a percentage of the profits that a show or movie makes. But if the show or movie lost money, then the company doesn’t need to pay those people. That’s why, according to Lucasfilm, Return of the Jedi, one of the most popular films of all time, has supposedly never gone into profit. And why stars like Harry Shearer and Peter Jackson have had to sue movie studios just to get paid.

So short answer, these companies are cooking the books in order to cheat on their taxes and cheat their own talent out of money.

So I decided to ask Bryke something really important to me, if there are any characters in the Avatar universe besides Korra and Asami who are part of the lgbtqa+ community.

“Sure there are!” Was Mike’s response.

“We’ve thought about it a lot!” Bryan concurred. “Kya, and Aiwei! And MORE. Some good, some bad!”

I repeat. Kya is confirmed gay. We were right. (Also Aiwei, didn’t see THAT coming!)
Thank you, Michael. Thank you, Bryke.
