Our last assignment for this art class is to do a graffiti-style piece of art about “something you want to tell the world.” It’s due tomorrow. I am brainstorming. These are my ideas so far.

What do you think

I decided to go with the quote about magic being science we don’t understand yet, and I got a great idea in my head to do the giant painting and then paint over it with invisible ink that will fluoresce under a black light, so I could be extremely dramatic when I was presenting it and be like ~REVEEEAAAL~ and point a black light at it

So I have spent the last several hours testing various household substances to find things that will glow under black light. The internet said baking soda, but I didn’t have luck with that. I also read laundry detergent, but the only detergent we have is blue, so it wouldn’t be invisible. I thought maybe toothpaste, but that was also a no-go. Although it reacted with the acidic iron gall ink I had made much more noticeably than the straight baking soda did, which is interesting. I was looking for other things to test out and ended up staining my mother’s blender with spinach and rubbing alcohol that obviously wouldn’t be invisible, but I thought it would be cool to include some of the various inks I’d been making. Under black light it shows up red, though, that’s cool. I also painted the background with watercolour and then put salt on it so I could talk about that and why it does what it does.

I’ll only have a few hours to work on it tomorrow and it will have to be done and dry by then. The next thing I’m going to try is breaking open a fluorescent marker and seeing how far I can dilute it and still have it glow, and if I can find any, talcum powder.

The difference between mad science and regular science is a dedication to theatrics.
