Three of the six men in the original photo never left Iwo Jima. One of the three survivors, Ira Hayes, became an alcoholic after the war and died in 1955 after a drunken altercation. He was hated by the mainstream US for being Native American and likely spent the last ten years of his life in emotional agony with no mental health resources to help him find peace again. Fuck your triumph. Fuck war. Fuck your hero worship.
