mrfeenysmustache:

What Makes Mothers

Written for @kagomes-hanakotobamatsuri event, week one: Courage, Strength, Peony

Word count: 300

Summary: Shippo watches Kagome, full of fire and ferocity, and he tucks away pieces of her in his heart and soul. She is a marvel. She is his mother.

—————————————

Shippo remembered his mother as nebulous feelings of warmth and safety.

He remembered his father more concretely, as he’d died later than his mother had, but he’d still lived far more life without either parent than he had with them, and so what memories he did have were stored away for safe keeping.

He watched Kagome yell at a man who was too impatient with his child, and he smirked as the man, who towered over her and was twice as broad, bowed and spilled apologies at her feet.

He shuffled off toward his hut, and Kagome gave the little boy with him one last pat on the head before shooing him off.

She turned back to him to finish their trek to her favorite herb patch, and he smiled down at her.

He was taller than she was now, and her hair was streaked with gray.

She, Sango, Miroku and Inuyasha carried lines of age and wisdom around their mouths and eyes, and he knew he would have to say goodbye to them far sooner than he’d ever be ready.

He savored the subtlety of her peony scent, and they were stopped again so she could chastise some older boys for teasing their young sister until she cried.

He watched the sun shine off of her rage, her unceasing desire for justice and fairness, and she was still so magnificent and beautiful and awe inspiring.

Shippo remembered his mother, the one who had born him, and he would never forget, but when asked in the future to describe her, Kagome is what he will see.

And he will say his mother was full of love, she fought for who needed it.

And no matter how many centuries he was destined to live, he would never forget anything about Kagome.
