It’s 7am and the air is already a warm 70 degrees: perfect weather for running the trail down to Lake Blue Side. The dirt under your sneakers is a familiar and welcome feeling. Back home, you’re always running on pavement, so the cushion of the ground is a nice change.

The trees that surround camp are lush and brimming with birds and insects. Just above this hill, the greenery will give way to the beach. It puts an extra spring in your step, and you push through the incline, sprinting until your shoes hit the sand.

The blue ripples lap at the shore line while the sun, hovering just above the horizon, warms the cool dark water. You walk toward the edge of the water, attempting to catch your breath from your uphill sprint. The past two years at Camp Blue Side, this lake has been your happy place. Most mornings, you sneak out of bed before sunrise and run the trail to this very spot.

The calming effect of the lake helps you make it through the hectic days at camp. Wrangling campers from sunrise to sunset (and then some) is tiring and doesn’t leave much room for your own thoughts to get sorted out. Your near-daily trips to the lake became even more important last summer.

~~~~~~~
As a JC, in your first year, you spent most of your time playing lackey to the Sports Leader. You had registered late (at the urging of your dear friend Seokjin), and the only position left for you was equipment manager. Between checking in on your campers and lugging sports and outdoor equipment around, you barely had a moment to breathe. It ended up being a good summer, but you knew you wanted a chance to try something different.
Year two, you got assigned to co-lead Team One and it was, somehow, an even more hectic summer than you had expected. Being responsible for the fun and safety of so many campers every day was fulfilling, but you’ve always valued alone time. Your trips to the lake increased ten-fold last year.
And that’s when you started noticing Hoseok.
Of course, you had seen him around camp and even made small talk with him in passing. You were friendly with all your fellow counselors, but aside from your Team One co-leader, your cabin mate, and Seokjin, you hadn’t had time to get to know anyone that well.
Every time you went for your run, you would spot Hoseok doing the same. At least most of the time. Other times, he would be doing push ups or lunges on the field. And when Hoseok exercises, he glows. When you run in the heat and humidity, you sweat. But Hoseok glistens.
So naturally, you began noticing him more, and he noticed you noticing. One thing led to another, and the casual group conversations transformed into less-casual solo conversations. HoseokbecameHobi, and he would always give you his chocolate pudding. He didn’t like it, and he knew that it was your favorite dessert. Around week five, he asked if you wanted to go on your morning run with him, and it ended with a kiss right here at the lake.
At the end of the summer, you gave him your number and he promised to call. He lived a ways away from camp, but only about an hour away from your university. There was definitely something there, and you were excited to see where it went.
But Hoseok broke his promise. He never called.
“He’s on the docket, just like the past several years. He’s not going to just not show up, Y/N.” Seokjin pointed at the Camp Blue Side staff list on his clipboard.
“Iknow that, Jin.” You roll your eyes at him. “But I’m just saying…”
“If you didn’t want to see Hoseok, why did you sign up for another year? You could’ve just stayed home.”
“I can’t let him win!” You shout, your voice carrying through the open windows in Seokjin’s office, disturbing the pre-camp peace.
Seokjin looks at you in silence. Relaxing your shoulders, you apologize silently.
“Look, you cannot let your petty energy affect your performance as a counselor. That’s not the way we do things around here, I know you know that.” You nod along with your friend’s gentle scolding. “And if your competitive nature is going to be an issue this summer, I need you to let me know so I can reassign you.”
“Reassign me?” You reach for the clipboard in Seokjin’s hand and read it over.
Jung, Hoseok - Team One Leader
Y/L/N, Y/N - Team Two Leader
“Oh,hell yes.” You pass the clipboard back to Seokjin and make your hasty exit, running from the office. You can hear him calling after you, probably afraid of what’s going through your head. But your head has actually cleared for the first time in months. There is only one thought now.
Let the games begin.
