Pairing: Jake “Hangman” Seresin x female!reader

Type: Enemies to lovers

Warnings: Injury, scary moment in an F-18, swearing

Word Count: 2.1k

Summary: Ever since the Naval Academy you and Jake had a friendly competition. Admittedly, it had gotten less and less friendly as time went on. It really reached its peak when you edged him out for the top position at Top Gun. You and Jake were deployed to different countries and hadn’t seen each other in years, almost forgetting about your rivalry until you were called back to Top Gun together.

A/N: So basically that scene with Phoenix and Bob instead it’s the reader and Fanboy. Also the reader’s call sign is Ambush.

The conversation level in the Hard Deck was enough to drown out the music coming from the jukebox in the corner. It was a Friday night, your favorite time to be at the Hard Deck. As many pilots and other people from the base that could get the night off all gathered there.

You were no different. You laughed and sipped your beer as you chatted with Phoenix, Bob, Payback, and Fanboy. You had been closest with them at Top Gun, so it made sense that you were still good friends all these years later. And with Fanboy as your WSO, where you went he went. It was just an added bonus that everyone else had been called back to Top Gun at the same time as you and Fanboy.

“I missed you guys,” Payback sighed, laughing as Phoenix beat Fanboy at another game of pool.

“What do we have here?”

A familiar voice sent a chill down your spine. Bob squeezed his eyes shut as he connected the dots between your suddenly tense shoulders and the booming voice that had wafted over the hum of conversation. Jake “Hangman” Seresin had entered the Hard Deck.

“Well if it isn’t Bagman,” Phoenix pulled the first punch.

“Hangman,” Jake corrected.

“Whatever,” she shrugged.

“Ambush, good to see you again,” Hangman sent a wink in your direction.

“Hangman,” you said coldly. Bob looked between you, almost scared about what might happen if Hangman took so much as a step towards you. He had images of you ramming your pool cue through his skull. And he didn’t like blood.

The sound of the old ship’s bell clanging broke the tension. You, along with the rest of the bar, cheered. Free drinks tonight.
