Anne Stallybrass as Jane Seymour in The Six Wives of Henry VIII (1970)
There’s a new historical documentary coming out called The Boleyns: A Scandalous Family and it might just be me, but out of all the six wives, I don’t think Anne’s was the most scandalous family, apart from the fact that Mary Boleyn was the mistress to Henry VIII.
What would be interesting is if they focused on the Seymour family. Now that’s what I would call a scandalous family with fathers sleeping with daughter-in-laws and not knowing if the children she produced were the sons of John or Edward Seymour. Then you have the family pushing Jane into the king’s sight, which screen adaptations prefer to use on Anne Boleyn’s family who were not supportive of Anne’s marriage at first. Then you have the business of Thomas Seymour who sexually abused his wife’s stepdaughter and technically his step niece who was was a child and then he killed his nephew’s dogs.
The Boleyns might have had a few scandals, but I think the Seymours won the race.
“One, two, three, four, five…”
“Six”
