Headcanon
Reggie is so enthusiastic about his “friendship” with Ray cause he misses his dad and his family. Above all cause his father, with which he had a strong relationship, after the divorce thing seemed to be every day further. Reggie tried so bad to stay loyal to each of his parents but things were very difficult in those day. He died thinking he was just a burden to them, only a bother to deal with and that made things more difficult.
For this when he sees the way Ray tries with all his efforts to be part and to be present in Julie and Carlos lives, he felt instantly connected with his childhood memory, in which the things were easier and his dad loves him more than everything.
He is just trying to feel again that warm feeling.
