Poppies

“When I was little, I used to be afraid of them,” Lennan murmurs and chuckles at some old, half-forgotten memory.
“Of what?”
“Poppies. Once I stumbled into a patch of poppies while chasing a butterfly. I started screaming so loud half the alienage thought someone was being murdered.”
Zevran shakes his head and grins. “What’s scary about poppies?”
Lennan’s brows come together in a thoughtful frown. “Dunno. Maybe because they looked like they were screaming? Later I got this idea that whenever you hold your anger or your grief back… When you want to cry or scream but instead you dip your head and grit your teeth and just…bear it…whatever it is… A poppy blooms for you somewhere. I thought maybe that was why there were so many of them in our alienage.” He smiles. “It’s poppycock, obviously…”
Zevran looks around and raises an ironic eyebrow. “So we’re lying amidst a field of screams. And here I thought we were being romantic.”
A warm, soft smile flutters across Lennan’s lips and nestles in his eyes. “I could have been wrong. Maybe they’re smiles waiting to happen.”
Zevran inches closer and kisses Lenn’s shoulder. “Now, that is an uncharacteristicallyhopeful thought, my dear Warden.”
“You’re a terrible influence, Zev,” Lennan mumbles sleepily as he snuggles up to him and closes his eyes.

Lennan has been redesigned since these were drawn but I like them too much to remove them. But if you come across this and actually see this note, pls do not reblog.
