A soft ironic laugh escaped my mouth as my eyes were focused on the television. Out of all things that were showing on the Belgian television, I had settled on Dr. Phil. He had been talking about how you know you met ‘the one’ if you had seen each other having the flu. Guess what was happening right now to me? Yes, that’s right, I was having the flu. The bucket next to our bed was my new best friend.

It was our first holiday together and everything so far had been a disaster. We hadn’t wanted to go very far, simply because it was a weekend off for Kai in a packed football season so we had ended up in Antwerp. The trip to Belgium had gone by pretty smoothly but that was about it. When we had entered the room, it was clear that the cleaning ladies were not done yet. The trash bags were scattered through the rooms and the sheets were dirty and in little heaps on the floor. It wasn’t hard to understand that Kai hadn’t been happy and went back downstairs. We quickly got assigned a new room, one that was even bigger than the previous one.

We enjoyed ourselves the first few days, but then I got the flu and I hated myself for it so much. Simply because it wasn’t destroying just my holiday but also Kai’s. I was embarrassed by the fact that he was only seeing me in the bed, running up and down between the bathroom and the bedroom. But he never complained one moment, he looked after me every single moment of the day and stayed in bed with me.

I had told Kai several times to go and enjoy the city, guilty for the fact that he was staying with me but every time he told me; “Y/N, I’m not going to leave you alone.” The small gesture warmed my heart.

Just as Dr. Phil had ended, Kai pushed open the door as he had left the room for a moment to get some food. It had taken quite some while and the raise in my eyebrows was enough for him to understand the question. “I’ve already eaten at the restaurant so you wouldn’t get nauseous like yesterday at the smell of the food. I did bring you some chickensoup, however.” I felt myself turn red at the memory of the night before. Yeah, that hadn’t been pretty at all.

Kai sat down on the bed next to me, pushing a strand of my hair out of my face. “It’s okay, babe. If this is what I have to do to keep you from throwing up again, then that’s what I will do.” He was so sweet and it made me melt on the inside. I snuggled up against his frame a bit more, his arms wrapping around me so he could hold me close.

“Thank you,” I mumbled softly, the words nearly unhearable due to me keeping my face pressed against his shirt.

“Thank  you for what?”

“Thank you for taking care of me the entire time.” A smile appeared on Kai’s face, pressing a kiss to the top of my head. “If you even think I would leave you alone in this room for you to look after yourself, you’re wrong. Yes, I had expected this holiday to go differently, but at least we are together,” he told me. A matching smile appeared on my lips as well.

“I love you,” he continued and I leaned up to carefully press a kiss to his cheek. He wanted to turn and kiss me on the lips but I shook my head. “No way, I don’t want to make you sick as well.” Well that, and I hadn’t had the chance yet to brush my teeth after me trying to have lunch which went wrong.

“But I love you too.”
