Kay Nielsen was an art nouveau illustrator who specialized in books for children. He worked as a concept artist for the Walt Disney company from 1937-1941. His work was used in Night on Bald Mountain and Ave Maria in Disney’s Fantasia. By the 1950’s, his style had fallen out of fashion, and he died in poverty in Los Angeles.

This 1924 book of Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tales features illustrations by Kay Nielsen.  Two great Danes, together at last!

Although most Anglophone people recognize the name Hans Christian Andersen, many do not realize just how pervasive his stories are.  In addition to crafting stories that would inspire wildly popular movies (like The Snow Queen andThe Little Mermaid), Andersen was also the man behind classics like The Ugly Duckling, The Nightingale, andThe Princess and the Pea.  Unlike many of the other “big names” in fairy tale literature (like Charles Perrault and the Brothers Grimm), Andersen wrote his own tales, as opposed to collecting stories that already existed.

Taschen have published an absolutely glorious reprint of East of the Sun and West of the Moon illustrated by Kay Nielsen. It’s a gorgeous and incredibly high-quality volume, and I give it my highest recommendation - if you love fairy-tale art and illustration, it’s simply unmissable. The best part is the introduction, which is packed full of rare Nielsen illustration spanning his whole career.

Seriously, go and buy this. Once I get my camera working I plan on taking photos of the interior to show you why this is a must have. It’s easily one of the best books in my collection.
