has anyone ever talked aobut how on earth gabe and tommy knew to come save puck and finn and dove the night of the storm????
My theory is that they were all sitting in the living room hanging out and having fun when suddenly Peg goes “GABRIEL CONNELLY ARE YOU TELLING ME THAT YOUR LITTLE SISTER AND BROTHER ARE IN THE MIDDLE OF THIS STORM BY THEMSELVES?” and Gabriel goes “well Puck would murder anything that hurts Finn, whether it’s a tourist or literal weather,” and Peg just “No. Unacceptable. What the fuck. No. Go get them now.” And Tommy rolls his eyes because yes Puck is terrifying but Gabe is being a douchebag about the whole situation and he gets in his car and Gabe dives in after him because he realizes Tommy is going with or without him and he doesn’t want to be /that/ guy though he already is.
Oh my gosh this is hilarious. YES THIS TOTALLY HAPPENED.
But, also, I’ve been thinking about this on a more serious note? I think he came to check on them because everyone on Thisby would be aware of what happens during an October storm, and even with all his faults, he didn’t want them dead. When you can’t call someone to see if they’re safe, you have to go to them. Also, I think he must have just been with Tommy (in one universe he was with with Tommy, if you know what I mean) rather than at the Gratton’s because Beech wasn’t with them (and because in another universe Peg’s sort of on my shit list and I don’t want her to have much to do with it and I hope Gabe was trying to avoid her). Don’t get me wrong, I despise Gabe as much as the next person, but Maggie writes morally gray characters who defy you to categorize or judge them, and who are so much more complex than what they appear to be on the surface.
Gabe is one of those people who is inexcusably stupidandselfish, but he also still happens to love his brother and sister when it comes down to it, even if he does a crap all job of showing it? He keeps tabs on them and is there for them in the only way he knows how (i.e. provide financially, look out for their physical wellbeing), which is what he thinks they need and not what they actually need (HE DOESN’T UNDERSTAND BECAUSE HE DOESN’T EVER ASK). So he can be all those terrible things and brotherly things at once and it’s really frustrating to accept because that’s life and it’s SO MESSY.
Anyway, I always took him showing up in Tommy’s car during the storm to be symbolic of who he was to Puck before: solid and there. And yet cars are liminal spaces; he won’t always be there, and he and Puck don’t want to go in the same direction. After the storm, Puck rides home with Dove all on her own. His road takes him away; hers takes her home. That’s all part of growing up and standing on one’s own two feet. If Gabriel Connolly’s horrible decisions were the catalyst, well, thank God Puck was brave enough to step up and make the most of things AND FUCKING SAVE THE DAY.
