“Mom, can we film from the waist up?” he asks. The camera zooms to film everything above his chest as he makes a stiff, soldier-like walk towards the windows for a more flattering light. It’s not nerves, but something he rather not the judges see until he proves himself. He formally bows and when he rises, his face radiates excitement. “Hello, my name is Kim Sunggyu,” he says. “I’m twenty-two, full of surprises, and want to be the gum stuck to the bottom of your shoe.” He smiles with his mouth open – goofy and dopey, but not unlike him – which exposes two gold fillings shining on his back teeth. “You won’t be able to get rid of me,” he says. “I take music seriously, only a step or two above proving people they’re wrong. I’m like a piece of coal right now, but I won’t disappoint the company who pressures me into becoming a diamond.”

→ The camera wobbles when his mother flashes him a double thumbs up, then quickly adjusts the camera so that this take would be their last. They’ve gone through several batteries, five different locations around the house, and grandma walking right in front of the camera on a quest to find her favorite fountain pen. Nobody wants to start all over again. “I’ve wanted to be a performer for as long as I can remember,” he says. “But, so do the other thousand people auditioning that are ten times more talented than me. That’s why I want to be the kind that tells stories that make people smile. I want to be the kind where kids turn on variety television and see a familiar face, someone like a brother or a neighbor. There are some challenges facing me that most people will never experience…” He looks down to massage his thigh, then looks back up with a flash of pure passion in his eyes. “I’m not the type to take excuses, short-cuts, or pin the blame on other people. When I set my eyes on a goal and reach it, I can’t just stop there. I can’t stop. You can’t ever stop. Never stop until you get enough.” They’ve made it to the end of his audition and just as he issues a dozen “thank you for your consideration”, his grandmother interrupts with a shout across the room. “Are you done with that nonsense yet? That’s 6000 won of batteries you two dingbats used up on nothing! You’re not going to be a singer.”  Sunggyu looks up at the camera partially amused, partially distant, and partially fueled by fire for the next round. “It’s okay mom,” he says. “We can just edit that part out.”
