“To be precise, it is not a living being, but magick woven in the likeness of a bird. One possessed of puissant healing powers. And as befits a masterwork of the Words of Lahabrea, it is a thing of beauty.”

Endwalker Updates to Rhitahtyn and Lahabrea Battles in ARR

I took a few evenings to work through ARR Part 4 in NG+, as the final chapter for 2.0 …starts after Titan. So you have to get through the Waking Sands Raid (thanks Yoshi-P), Central Coerthas (derogatory), Corrupted Crystals (my detested), and then Garuda, and then finally rescuing the Scions from Castrum Centri and kicking off Operation Archon. Whew.

Honestly, I hated Central Coerthas and the Corrupted Crystals much more than the Company of Heroes on my initial playthrough, but I already have a postabout that. Anyway.

(Also Honestly, ARR parts should be broken down by: Intro to Ifrit, Ifrit to Titan, Titan to Garuda, Garuda to End. Levels 1-20 go MUCH quicker than the rest of the game.)

Don’t forget to turn on the Watch Previously Viewed Cutscene option in your Settings! More below:

Much as I’ve come to appreciate New Gaius, Rhitahtyn is a character I kinda wish had lived instead. He chugged the imperial koolaid, but likely out of desperation and Gaius’s genuine sense of meritocracy, and with Rhitahtyn’s own sense of honor he might have come around. Rhitahtyn was loyal, but also so good as a commander that his men, in both iterations of the fight, come to his aid despite being hopelessly outclassed by the WoL, and despite his own orders to protect them. I’m still disappointed we never got more of him, and the fight in the Aitiascope isn’t enough.

The new Cape Westwind shows the Praefectus was an unstoppable force of nature. Like Gosetsu in Stormblood, Rhitahtyn shows superhuman levels of endurance.

I set it to very easy (I was here for story after all) but only hit him with my unenchanted melee attacks (RDM). He has a lot of health for that level. Lots of line and circle AOEs. Then he falls, and his men he ordered away come to fight you. He tries to use line AOEs to fight while panting on the ground as they die. Then he gets mad, and you fight him again, and he has more combo aoe attacks. Then you think you’ve defeated him and look sad (the cutscene is in the Unending Journey even), but he gets up AGAIN, super-holmgangs you, and starts burning the area around you both while cleaving. His health is failing the whole time in an increasing debuff, but it’s a timed race to see which of you falls first. Then he falls back into the teleporter as originally. Wol’s still not happy about it.

The Praetorium breakdown works great and some of the speechifying is now in scenes in between Prae and Porta Decumana. You can get Ultima Weapon down to 0.1% health and have to wait for each of the Primals to appear with their raid-wides, and their ultimate attacks where Hydaelyn saves WoL, before it can go down. She also does NOT give a max level WoL doing it unrestricted a LB3, cuz I could finish it before Ultima cast. Then you get Lahabrea’s second speech post-Ultima, and the solo duty.

Lahabrea I had to fight For Real, cuz he was kinda scary when an unenchanted melee strike barely dented him; the difference between a duty boss at lvl 49 vs “you should have your AF gear” at 50.

At one point he grabs WoL in fetters, and while you can kill the balls, I don’t think it’s possible to get all of them in time, especially for the melee jobs with limited ranged attacks. But Hydaelyn intervenes directly, Lahabrea’s mad about it, WoL gets a Light-Fire aura for the rest of the battle.

There’s more of his many AOE attacks; it’s very busy and sprouts may find it challenging not being used to how some AOE patterns can overlap and their sequences. You have to get him nearly to the end before he gives the “if I die so does this body I reside in, so make your choice!” line, and Hydaelyn’s response to not listen to him. And then it goes into the finale cutscenes.

A few of Lahabrea’s text-only lines are changed, too, with a mention of “you imperfect beings.”

Basically if not for Crystal Mom, Lahabrea kills the WoL. It’s a fight worthy of an Unsundered overlord, good for an epic finale to ARR at level 50, in addition to the fantastic changes to Meridianum, Praetorium, and Decumana.

It also makes the Nabriales defeat a little more impressive, as we’re without Hydaelyn’s intervention–though it does require a sacrifice to make sure it happens.

The changed fights and MSQ dungeons do well to train for future difficult content, feel far more Epic for the finale of ARR’s base story, and do far better for characters otherwise meme’d on by the community for so long.
